Project shuts down for four weeks

Story
Story

The Hamilton section project has shut down for four weeks, as instructed by the Government in addressing the Covid 19 pandemic. This project is the final section of the Waikato Expressway, due for completion in late 2021.

Extra site security is in place for the shutdown period. Project staff will continue to monitor environmental controls within the project site, and areas under traffic management. Key staff will continue to work from home on essential activities and project administration. The team will also plan for the rapid recommencement of work once staff can return to the site.

You may have questions about what this closure will mean for project completion dates. We are still working to establish this information, and we will keep you updated on this.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency remains committed to keeping New Zealanders moving and will resume work as soon as possible.

Restoring the land

We’re restoring two large tracts of land on both sides of the expressway where we have removed sand to build expressway embankments. These areas, just north of SH26 Morrinsville Road, have been filled and contoured. They are currently being topsoiled and seeded to return them to pasture.

Building a retaining wall on SH1

On SH1 just south of Hamilton, we’ve built a large retaining wall using steel ‘H’ beams. Once complete, we will build a shared walking/cycling path below that will eventually connect through to Tamahere and the city.

Coloured pavers tell a story

This video shows the final design panel being constructed from coloured pavers beneath the Gordonton Road Bridge. These panels depict the cultural significance of the star constellation Matariki (Pleiades), plus the mountains, rivers and gardening areas of the Waikato. Three bridges carry these panels – the East West Link Bridge over SH1 at Tamahere, plus the bridges on Gordonton Road and Horsham Downs Road.
