1. Night works are under way

Story
Story

At the Southern Interchange, our pavements team are laying and stabilising rock during the day, then laying asphalt at night. Asphalt has to be laid at night to ensure there is a consistent supply from the plant, and to avoid delays caused by peak traffic.

The team started in the south near the Tamahere Interchange in January, and they are progressively working north. Night works are expected to take 8-10 weeks, depending on weather.

‘Squawkers’ have replaced reversing ‘beepers’ on construction vehicles to reduce noise, and other measures are in place to minimise effects on project neighbours.

2. Birchwood Lane sealed

A widened section of Birchwood Lane was sealed in the week before Christmas. Drainage works and finishing works to driveways continued this month.

The new East West Link Road will connect Birchwood Lane with Cherry Lane on the other side of the expressway, and provide a new road link in and out of Hamilton.

3. Excavation near Matangi Road

The expressway route is taking shape either side of the Matangi Road Bridge. Excavation is largely complete on the northern side, and continues on the southern side.

Waste material from the excavation is being used to form large embankments along the route that will reduce noise and visual effects from the expressway where it opens for traffic.

4. Building our longest bridge

The centre columns and piers that will hold up the Mangaonua Gully Bridge are progressing well.

This bridge – the longest at 150m – is also the only bridge on the project with steel beams. All the others are concrete.

6. Puketaha Road will close on 9 February

Puketaha Road will close from 3.30am to 5.00pm on Saturday 9 February to allow the concrete deck to be safely poured on the new bridge that crosses Puketaha Road. The road will reopen earlier if work is completed early.

The road will be closed at the bridge site only.

7. Reshaping Greenhill Road

Greenhill Road will be diverted under the new bridge at the Greenhill Interchange. Stop/Go traffic controls will be in place for some time while the new road layout is formed and finished.

Construction of the Pardoa Boulevard extension to the interchange will be under way by February 2019.
