Project Update - Awatere Valley

10 November 2021 | Next update 17 November 2021

Marlborough Roads Information

For the latest Marlborough Roads Access Programme, read our Programme of Access.

Please note that the Programme of Access provides a high-level overview only. There will be times when the Awatere Valley Road will need to be closed to allow work to be completed safely. We’ll let you know about any changes to the programme in advance via our Roading Updates.

Marlborough Roads Recovery Team would like to thank everyone affected by the July storm damage throughout our roading network for their patience during this difficult time.

Christmas period work break

The Awatere Valley Road is currently Controlled Access from the signage just beyond the Medway intersection. There is currently no Public Access for non-residents through the Awatere Valley to Molesworth Recreation Reserve.

This status will be in place until 22 December 2021.

From 23 December 2021 to 16 January 2022, the road will be open to the public.

The road access status will return to Controlled Access from 17 January 2022.

Work will stop over the Christmas period to give crews a well-earned break and allow them to spend time with their families. We’re expecting increased non-resident road users over this period, so traffic will be able to flow more freely if work is stopped during this time. If urgent work is required we'll send out notifications through our usual channels.

Truck and trailer access

During periods when the road access status is Controlled Access, 24-hours’ notice is required for truck and trailer access. Please phone 0800 213 213 or 03 520 8024, 8am - 5pm, Monday to Friday, or email recovery@marlboroughroads.com

This will not be required over the Christmas period when there is Public Access.

Project update

The second stage of river re-alignment work at the Limestone Bridge was completed on Saturday 6 November. This work was undertaken to protect the road affected by the storm floods.

We also completed road surface improvements and water table repairs 1.7km from the Old Upcot Bridge.

The other job for last week was tidying water tables and clearing small slips between Awapiri and the concrete spillways.

This week, the crew will be working on temporary access improvements at the Unnamed Cattle-Stop Bridge.

They will also be crushing gravel at Gladstone for use on the road networks and completing the road surface improvements and water table repairs 1.7km from the Old Upcot Bridge.

Further work planned this week includes slip clearing, other water table repairs, installing gabion baskets to protect road edges and cleaning around culverts for 11km past the Medway Road intersection.
