Get ready for some traffic changes

Over the next three weeks, there will be a series of traffic changes right along the second stage of Christchurch Southern Motorway.

  • In some areas the speed limit will increase to 80km/h;
  • On Main South Road, between Rolleston and the Main South Road bridge, two lanes of traffic will be reinstated, travelling in both directions;
  • Both citybound lanes will be opening from Main South Road all the way to Halswell Junction Road through to the city;
  • The southbound lanes from Halswell Junction Road through to Main South Road will open in two stages. The first stage, from the Shands Road Interchange to Main South Road, will open in approximately two weeks. The second stage (through to the city) will open around two weeks after the first stage.

Construction of the new roundabout at Main South Road/Dawsons Road/Waterholes Road will continue for the rest of 2020, with temporary speed restrictions in place.

Changes to the local road network and road closures are also planned around railway crossings at Curraghs Road, Weedons Ross Road and Dawsons Road. We will give you a heads up, closer to the time.

Stick to the speeds

To help protect recently laid pavement on the new motorway, it is still really important to stick to the signposted temporary speed limits. We don't want to go back later to undertake costly and disruptive repairs.

Try the shared path

The new shared path travels alongside the southbound lanes, linking the first section of motorway shared path with the Little River Rail Trail.
The footpaths around Halswell Junction Road Interchange are also ready to use.
(Cyclists and pedestrians are not permitted on the motorway. Instead, follow the signs and use the shared path provided.)
