Selena Uibo Media Release NT Judicial Commission Starts Work 10 November 2021 Territorians can now access an independent body to investigate complaints about the behaviour or capacity of judicial officers and ordinary members of NTCAT. The Judicial Commission begins work today, and was established by the Territory Labor Government to increase the transparency and accountability of the judicial branch of government without undermining judicial independence. Examples include: · Unreasonable delay in handing down a judgement; · Inappropriate comments or questions in court; · Bullying or sexual harassment. Members of the Judicial Commission include the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Chief Judge of the Local Court, the President of NTCAT, the President of the Law Society NT and a community member of high standing. The latter position has been taken by long-term Darwin resident Sabaratnam Prathapan, following a call for expressions of interest. The Judicial Commission will investigate all valid complaints and will either: · Dismiss the complaint; · Refer it to the head of the relevant court or tribunal with recommendations for action; · Establish an investigation panel to deal with the most serious complaints. The Judicial Commission will reinforce the highest standards of accountability and will increase public confidence in the justice system. For more information, please visit the NT judicial commission website https://judicialcommission.nt.gov.au.
Quotes from Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Selena Uibo: “The Judicial Commission will help bolster confidence in the administration of justice and ensure judicial officers in the Territory maintain the highest standards of accountability. “Previously complaints against a judicial officer or ordinary member of NTCAT had to go directly to the head of the relevant court or tribunal, placing responsibility on one individual. “I congratulate those appointed to the Judicial Commission and look forward to the important work they will carry out for Territorians.” Northern Territory Government |
