SH58 improvements

Project update

30 May 2025

Work will be underway soon

Kia ora,

We'd like to let you know that NZTA will be starting work on the final stage of the safety improvements along SH58 in June.

NZTA has contracted Downer NZ for this part of the final stage of works. This includes the construction of two new roundabouts – one at Moonshine Road, and the other at Murphys/Flightys Roads.

Trees on the corner of Moonshine Rd and SH58 that we're removing ahead of construction.

First task will be tree felling

One of the first things we’ll do is fell some trees near the Moonshine Road intersection.

Work is planned for up to three weeks from mid-June between 9am-4pm.

Work will proceed if it rains, although high winds may affect the decision to go ahead on any particular day.

Drivers will experience short periods of stop/go, but we anticipate this will have a low impact on the network.

Throughout the project, we’ll strive to maintain access to properties at all times but if for any reason we do need to restrict access to a property, it will be done in full consultation with the property owner/s and of course if there’s an emergency – workers will allow any emergency staff and vehicles access.

Throughout the project, NZTA staff and construction crews will make sure there is ongoing communication with affected property owners so that we can plan around their requirements.

Minimising impacts

As you’re aware, large infrastructure projects such as this are complex, and construction must progress while also ensuring the highway remains open for drivers, residents, and local businesses.

Teams on the ground will minimise the impact of the work as best as possible for motorists.  It's important to understand that some disruption will be unavoidable – especially when the roundabouts  are realigned and connected, and when median barriers are being installed.

Just to recap, this work has already been consented, which means we won’t be publicly consulting further on what’s being constructed.

However, we’ll continue to communicate with residents and property owners directly impacted by this work and continue to inform the wider community about what’s happening and when, throughout the project.

Thank you for your continued support as we deliver these important safety improvements.
