O Mahurangi – Penlink

28 February 2023

Kia ora koutou/Hello everyone,

On behalf of the O Mahurangi - Penlink team, we hope this message finds you and your whānau/family and friends safe and well after the challenging weather we’ve had. Our thoughts are with everyone, especially those who were personally impacted by the three recent storms.

Fortunately, there was little damage on site thanks to our stormwater controls working well. Our team has supported each other outside of work with clean up after the storms. The safety and wellbeing of our team and community remain our top priority. We will continue monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and quality of our work.

Take care and stay safe.

- Gavin, Alliance Project Manager

Early Works Continue

Our team has commenced earthworks for the project site office on Ara Wēiti Road, where all project staff will work from once ready. Prefabricated units will soon be delivered to the site.

Physical works are underway for Fill 9 which is the largest on the project and located near Ara Wēiti Road. A fill is a solid earth structure created by spreading and compacting soils from excavation. First, we will excavate the unsuitable material at the base of the gully. Next, we will add underfill drainage and a drainage blanket to control natural groundwater seepage beneath the fill. Bulk earthworks started in mid-February and will continue through the end of summer.

Local community members may hear helicopters as we continue to move geotechnical testing equipment in the Stillwater area. This work will provide us with crucial information on environmental conditions in the area and ensure we build a safe and durable road. Helicopter work is expected to be complete in mid-March.

Machinery continues to be established on site for mulching and we are preparing to clear vegetation on the western side of Duck Creek Road. This week, long-term temporary traffic management on Duck Creek Road is being established due to the restricted space and to ensure the safety of all road users and construction staff. As part of this, other temporary traffic management will be necessary at times on other sections of Duck Creek Road as we work nearby.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as our team works to ensure early works are completed efficiently and safely, with minimal disruption to the local community. Detailed construction notifications will go out to affected residents with more information. If you have any questions regarding construction, please call 0800 7365 465 or email omahurangi@nzta.govt.nz.

Pest Free O Mahurangi - Penlink

O Mahurangi - Penlink is working with Forest & Bird, an independent conservation organisation, to tackle the problem of pests in the project area. The collaboration aims to protect the native flora and fauna by getting rid of predators from Archers Block.

Pests such as rats, possums and other more elusive species such as stoats pose a major threat to our native flora and fauna. According to Forest & Bird, “more than 50 species of native birds have been seen on the coast and 20 of these are categorized as at risk.” Pests have a significant impact on the survival of native birds, lizards and insects, and without our efforts would continue to wreak havoc on our local wildlife.

The pest control efforts involve Forest & Bird deploying over 100 bait stations, and other various types of traps in order to try and reduce the number of pests. The traps are placed in areas where pests are known to be, and regular monitoring ensures their effectiveness. This work is part of a wider trapping and pest control program undertaken by Forest & Bird and other community organisations in the Hibiscus Coast area.

We need all the help we can get to preserve our environment. If you would like to get involved, please visit the Forest & Bird - Hibiscus Coast branch website: forestandbird.org.nz/branches/hibiscus-coast
