The month that's been and the month ahead

Since our last update the team delivering the SH1 and Tarewa Road intersection improvements have reached several milestones! In this update, you will find information about these in addition to key dates for the coming months.

In late July the shared service trenches were completed. These trenches not only carry a number of services to near by private properties, they also help to ensure uninterrupted access for the wider Whangarei region. Installing the trenches wasn't easy or quick. It needed the co-ordination of serveral specialist contractors to lay cables and ensure existing services were not interupted.

With these services completed, significant progress has been made in building the new northbound lanes in Tarewa Park and north of Matipo Place. It started with the successful traffic 'switch' to move traffic onto the new section of the Otaika Bridge, completed on Monday, 14 October 2019. This change meant that we could continue to build new southbound lanes and create room for the new footpaths and vehicle crossing that will be completed later this month.

Please continue to expect some delays while drivers get used to the new layout. You may wish to consider using Rewa Rewa Road as an alternative route to the city if you are driving in from the South. Allow extra time in your journey and drive with care as the road alignment will change.

Read on to find out more about what we've done, what's coming up and some upcoming traffic changes.

What have we done?

• Continued building the new SH1 northbound lanes through Tarewa Park and north of the Matipo Place intersection.

• Completed installing services into the new shared service trenches and connecting properties to them. The shared service trenches will make it easier to locate, maintain and upgrade services in future.

• Continued to build the new retaining walls and acoustic fences on private properties. These will help to support SH1 once the work is complete and will minimise road noise for residents.

• Completed installing the new storm water system along SH1. The new stormwater system will help to control runoff and improve quality of water entering our waterways.

• Once the underground power cable was activated, we completed the removal of the overhead power lines and temporary power transformers.

Traffic now runs on the new side of the bridge enabling the demolition of the old Otaika Bridge to start. Once completed, the bridge will have four lanes, pedestrian access and an underpass beneath it.

What will we do in November?

• Moving traffic onto the new northbound lanes had allowed us to build new southbound lanes north of Matipo Place.

We 'break out' the existing road, footpath, kerbs and channel to allow us to begin building the new southbound lanes.

The new road will be up to 500mm higher to meet the level of the new Otaika Bridge. It has been designed this way to reduce the likliehood of flooding from the Raumanga Stream.

• We will build footpaths north of Matipo before we move traffic onto the new lanes.

Upcoming Traffic Changes

We continue to work on the new northbound lanes of SH1 so that we will be able to maintain traffic flow when we begin to complete the pavement work on the southbound lanes.

The map below shows where traffic will be moved to, once preparation work at the SH1 and Matipo Place is completed. Both north and southbound vehicles will be moved further east, creating enough room for the work area.

Please know that we will maintain 50kmph and 3m lane widths throughout the work, but please take extra care and slow down when driving through the site.
