The trip included a lunch at the Narromine Irrigation Scheme to see the results of recent infrastructure projects delivering efficiency gains as an alternative to buybacks, an update on water issues from Macquarie River Food and Fibre, and a rundown on the Macquarie Marshes “Burrima” property from local grower Tony Wass. The Australian Cotton Industry has released its latest Sustainability Update. The report offers a detailed view of our sustainability performance and achievements, providing valuable insights for growers and industry stakeholders. Cotton Australia General Manager and Chair of the QFF Water and Energy Policy Committee, Michael Murray, was part of a QFF delegation that met with the Queensland Water Minister in Brisbane last week. Build has begun on the Australian Cotton Industry Data Platform, being developed by CRDC in partnership with growers and the wider cotton industry. Growers are encouraged to get involved and have their say in shaping the platform. Cotton Australia’s Cotton to Market Lead, Brooke Summers, recently addressed the Australian Cotton Scientists Conference, highlighting how global pressures are reshaping cotton and why brands are demanding stronger data on sustainability, traceability and credentials. The APVMA has extended the minor use permit (PER82660) which allows the use of tebuconazole to control Alternaria Leaf Spot in cotton. This permit has been in force since 2016 and is restricted to cotton grown in NSW only. Tebuconazole can be applied at 440 mL/ha as a preventative treatment for Alternaria. A maximum of two applications is permitted per crop. Tebuconazole may not be used less than 42 days prior to harvest. Khapra beetle has been detected in imported nappy products and referred to DAFF. While this pest does not affect cotton, it is a serious threat to stored grain and could cause major issues if established in Australia.
