Construction update | He pānui

Kia ora

We hope everyone has had a good summer break and are rested and refreshed for the year ahead.

Our team has hit the ground running and we're firing on all cylinders!  With more warm, dry weather, the crews are making great progress, both day and night.   The installation of all box culverts sections on the northbound side of the motorway is done and dusted, and real progress has also been made with building the new pavement that will form the third northbound lane.  We've been laying down the cement-treated basecourse for the new lanes during the day and then the slip-form concrete barriers go in at night.  It's a well-oiled machine!

Things are really moving along on Beach Road too (above) – the concrete for the shared walking and cycling path is all set to be poured later this month.  Please note that coming up in February, the northbound off-ramp at Papakura Interchange will need to be fully closed for up to 4 weeks – read below to find out more.

Down at the Drury Interchange, bird mesh and anti-throw screens are being installed on the three North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) bridges.  Work will then pause on these bridges for a while until the next stage of the project gets underway.

Northbound off-ramp closure | Ka aukati tētahi off-ramp

Coming up on Monday 19 February, we must fully shut the Papakura northbound off-ramp for up to four weeks.  This closure is needed as testing has shown that the underlying foundation of the current off-ramp is not in good condition and needs to be dug up and rebuilt to properly strengthen it.  We will also realign where the off-ramp splits from the motorway to make room for the third northbound lane.

This extended closure means that northbound motorists wanting to get off at Papakura will need to get off at either Drury or Takanini Interchange instead, as shown in the detour map below.

Stronger for longer | Kaha ake mō te wā roa ake

Ever wondered what goes into making a motorway tough enough to handle extreme weather and heavy loads?  Well, one of the secret weapons is good old cement!

While rolling and compacting various layers of gravel (aggregate), we incorporate cement to really bind it all together before topping things off with asphalt.  This super strong layer is called cement-treated basecourse, or CTB for short.  CTB improves the strength of the pavement to support the big loads that come from all that motorway traffic.

Last month, the crew finished laying all the CTB on the northbound side of the motorway along the full length of this stage (Stage 1A) of the project.  The team are now busy doing the same thing on the southbound side, north of Papakura Interchange.

Before the final asphalt can be laid however, there's more work to do yet.  On the northbound side we're installing concrete safety barriers using a crab-like machine called an 'offset slipform paver', more commonly called a slip-form barrier machine.  This work needs the motorway to be closed during it for safety reasons, meaning it can only be done at night.  Later this month, the slip-form barrier crew will move over to the southbound side to the north of Papakura and build more barriers there.

Beach Road update | Pānui ki Beach Road

As part of the project, we are building a new southbound on-ramp at Papakura Interchange.  Progress has been moving along on Beach Road over the past month, and the big stormwater drainage pipes we talked about late last year are all in the ground now.

Before we could start drilling under the road to put in new cables for the traffic signals, we had to do some detective work – figuring out exactly where all the existing pipes and wires are buried.  No wrong turns are allowed when you're drilling underground! ️

Now, during February there will be some activity at night around the Chichester Drive/Elliot Road/Beach Road intersection.  This will be us carefully installing new ducts that will house the cabling for the traffic lights.

This month, cement-treated basecourse (CTB) will also be laid for the new Beach Road southbound on-ramp.  Once this new on-ramp is finished (expected around early May), drivers approaching Papakura Interchange on Beach Road and wanting to head south on SH1 will have a brand-new way to hop onto the motorway.  No more loop-de-loops for those coming from the Papakura side – however the loop on-ramp will continue to be used by motorists coming from the Karaka side and heading south on the motorway.

Looking ahead | E haere ake nei

During the coming months, our project works include:

  • Continuing to build pavement for road widening on the northbound side of the motorway, including north of Papakura Interchange
  • Continuing pavement and drainage works on the southbound side of the motorway, north of Papakura Interchange
  • Continuing work on a new southbound on-ramp at Papakura Interchange
  • Continuing drainage, shared path and pavement works on Beach Road
