NZ Upgrade Programme announcement

Waka Kotahi welcomes the Government’s confirmation on the direction and funding commitment to deliver the NZ Upgrade Programme.

It means Waka Kotahi will now be able to fully deliver 16 significant projects across the country that have confirmed scopes, costs and timeframes and are designed to respond better to climate change and housing needs.

Communities can look forward to transport improvements that provide more travel choices and help people get where they’re going safely, as well as future proofing and growing our economy, while responding to the impacts of travel on the environment.

These projects include Ōtaki to North of Levin, the Northern Pathway, Penlink, SH58, SH1/29 in the Waikato, Melling, and the Canterbury and Queenstown transport packages.

State Highway 58 safety improvements

This decision gives certainty for the delivery of the State Highway 58 safety improvements project.

With the first stage of safety improvements on State Highway 58 due for completion soon, certainty that the second stage will continue to be delivered is good news for the region.

The second stage of this project is the 5.5km road between Mt Cecil Road through to the Transmission Gully Interchange at Pāuatahanui. Works are currently underway between Mount Cecil and Harris Roads.

It is expected that there will be an increase in traffic volumes using SH58 with the opening of Transmission Gully, and continued funding will ensure greater safety, efficiency and reliability for people using the road.

We will continue to keep our partners and the community updated as we progress with work on the State Highway 58 safety improvements project.
