PENN READING PROJECT
The Penn Reading Project introduces first-year students to the Provost’s Academic Theme — which in 2019 is the Year of Data — and creates an opportunity for the Class of 2023 and Penn faculty from all disciplines to share an intellectual experience. This year’s text is Cathy O’Neil’s Weapons of Math Destruction, a provocative study of how statistics and data are used and misused and the impact on our world.

Early in the day, all first-year students will attend a required introductory presentation on Weapons of Math Destruction. Later in the afternoon, they will meet in small groups with a member of Penn’s faculty for a conversation about the book and its themes.

The Year of Data will continue through the 2019-20 academic year and will feature programs and events intended to engage the entire Penn community in exploring the many ways data shapes our lives. Visit the theme year website for more details at www.yearofdata.org.
