Marlborough Roads Recovery Update

This Weeks Summary

 
 

From Tuesday 17 December, the resident only restriction on the length of Kenepuru Road will be lifted following a final safety review. Water taxi and barge subsidies will no longer apply after this date. Please refer to the road restrictions below for further information.  

On Tepuia Heights, weekday contruction closures are in place for drainage upgrades between 10am and 12pm and 12.30pm and 4pm until Thursday 19 December. 

Tara Bay Road remains closed to all traffic on weekdays until Thursday 19 December for remedial repairs.

Work continues on Ronga Road, French Pass where an under road box culvert has been installed.

Construction of a new over-bridge on Stump Creek Road, Rapaura is underway. 

The new Waihopai Valley bridge upstream of the current temporary bailey bridge is now complete. Work continues on the road approach. 

All recovery works will finish by midday Friday 20 December for the Christmas break. Work will resume on some sites under stop/go in the week starting Monday 6 January. These sites will be confirmed next week.  

Please ensure you keep to the reduced temporary speed limits when travelling through worksites to ensure the safety of our crews and road users. We thank you for your patience.

Road closures

 
 

Kenepuru Road - Water Tank slip

Kenepuru Road from the Onahau Road intersection remains closed to all traffic tomorrow, Friday 13 December from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm and on Monday 16 December from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm. 

Outside of the closures, works will be carried out under stop/go traffic management with up to 15 minute delays. If you have any concerns, please contact recovery@marlboroughroads.com.

Daytime construction closures are planned to restart in the week of Monday 20 January 2025.

Tepuia Heights - Queen Charlotte Drive

Daytime construction closures are in place on Tepuia Heights, until Thursday 19 December on weekdays between 10am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 4pm. These closures are for the upgrade of culverts, other stormwater upgrades and road reinstatement works.

Work will be completed outside of these times under stop/go traffic management, please expect delays.

Tara Bay - Kenepuru

Daytime construction closures for remedial works will be in place on Tara Bay Road on weekdays between 7.30am and 5.30pm until Thursday 19 December. 

 

 

Resident access restriction on Kenepuru Road to be lifted on 17 December

 
 

From Tuesday 17 December, the resident only restriction wll be removed from the length of Kenepuru Road, and its side roads, following a final safety inspection. 

Along with traffic management and speed limit signage, there will also be temporary traffic lights installed at Portage Heights and approximately 500m beyond Nikau Cove (when travelling from Portage). A third set of lights will be installed at the 'water tank slip' site over the Christmas break. All three sites will have a 30km temporary speed limit in place. Please expect minor delays and follow all traffic management signage. 

Vehicle restrictions will remain at 12.6m long and 6 tonnes in weight although a permit for a vehicle outside this length and weight can be applied for in advance. Permits may require pilotage, depending on the overall length of the vehicle and the time of travel.

To apply for a permit for an over dimension vehicle to travel on Kenepuru Road, email recovery@marlboroughroads.com or call 0800 213 213. Please note that a minimum of two working days are needed to process a permit request.

With the removal of the resident only restrictions on Kenepuru Road from Tuesday 17 December, the transport subsidies that have been provided for barging, water taxi and air services will no longer apply. These services can continue to be used, but will not be subsidised.

Current Kenepuru Road restrictions

 
 

On Tuesday 17 December, resident only restrictions will lift on Kenepuru Road from Onahau Road to the Heads, and its side roads, Moetapu Bay Road and Te Mahia Road, will reopen to the public. 

From Tuesday 17 December, vehicle restrictions will remain on Kenepuru Road from Linkwater to the Heads:

Vehicle Restrictions

Vehicles up to 12.6m in length, and 6 tonne in weight can travel on Kenepuru Road and the following side roads; Mahau Road, Torea Road and Moetapu Bay Road as far as Double Bay Reserve.

This allows access to boat launching areas at Double Bay Reserve, Torea and Portage.

On all other side roads, between Kenepuru Road to the Heads no vehicles over 8m in length or 3.5 tonne in weight are permitted.

The following restrictions also apply on Kenepuru Road and it's side roads including Moetapu Bay Road:

  • No campervans, vans or buses
  • Only 4WD and light vehicles

There are the following hazards on this section of Kenepuru Road and its side roads including Moetapu Bay Road:

  • Slips
  • Drop outs
  • Single lane in places
  • Increased hazard during rain
  • Uneven surfaces and gravel sections

Extreme care should be exercised and daylight driving only is strongly recommended.

Other recovery roads

Please be aware that on all roads, works may be in progess and/or traffic management in place. Please expect delays and follow all signage and traffic management.

Heavy rain may lead to roads being closed at short notice. Regardless of the status of the road, please drive to the conditions.

French Pass

 
 

A new retaining wall on Croisilles-French Pass Road, 5km from Okiwi Bay is complete and the traffic lights at this site removed. 

Construction continues on Ronga Road, 10km from the start of the road. The crew continue to build a MSE (mechanically stablised earth) wall around the face of the new box culvert. Stop/go traffic management is in place at this site. Please expect delays of up to 20 minutes. 

 

 

Kenepuru Road

 
 

Daytime closures remain on Kenepuru Road, from Onahau Road until Monday 16 December, 20km from the start of the road at the 'water tank slip' site. Please refer to the road closure section for further information.

The new retaining wall at 'water tank slip' is nearing completion. The wall has been backfilled and the team are finishing work on the gabion baskets. Work will continue off the road at this site next week.

Crews will stop work at this site over the holiday period with work planned to resume on Monday 13 January 2025 under stop/go traffic management. Construction closures are planned from the week of Monday 20 January. 

Prior to the resident restriction lifting, there will be temporary traffic lights installed on Kenepuru Road at Portage Heights and approximately 500m beyond Nikau Cove (when travelling from Portage). A third set of lights will be installed at the 'water tank slip' site over the Christmas break. All three sites will have a 30km temporary speed limit in place. Please expect minor delays and follow all traffic management signage.

Construction at Torea on Kenepuru Road is now complete. The site has been sealed, line marked and sight rails installed.

Remedial road reinstatement works are underway on Tara Bay Road under road closures from 7.30am to 5.30pm untill Thursday 19 December.

Stock trucks on Kenepuru Road

Stock trucks have made their way beyond the 'water tank slip' on Kenepuru Road for the first time in more than three years, marking a significant milestone for the Marlborough region's storm repairs.

Marlborough Roads Manager Steve Murrin said the repair, located about 1km east of Onahau Road turnoff, was one of many required on the region's roads, particularly in the Marlborough Sounds following a storm in July 2021.

Moetapu Bay

 
 

Excavations at Elephant Point road retreat on Moetapu Bay Road are complete and dish channel preparation and construction is now underway. 

This work is being carried out under stop/go traffic management. Please expect delays.

Queen Charlotte Drive

 
 

Work on Queen Charlotte Drive, 7km from Picton above Whenuanui (Becks Bay) is now complete. Line marking is scheduled for his site prior to Christmas. 

Preparation for culvert installation is underway on the Grove Track, Queen Charlotte Drive after the installation of a willow brush wall was completed between Korimako Rise and Tepuia Heights. Drainage improvement works will continue at this site over the next week. 

Construction on Tepuia Heights continues this week for drainage improvements and road reinstatement. Preparation for a new dish channel were completed last week. This week, the channel was poured and multiple culvert installations undertaken. Road closures will continue until Thursday 19 December from 10am to 4pm with a lunchtime opening from 12pm to 12.30pm on weekdays.

Last week work commenced on Stump Creek Road, off Rapaura Road to build a new bridge.

The crews have removed the existing culverts and a new rock channel has been completed. Work has also begun on the concrete abutment foundations for the new bridge.

Work continues on the rock revetment at Dalton's Bridge. River protection works are underway to reform the riverbank batter. Please expect increased truck movements in the area.

Waihopai Valley

 
 

With the construction of the new Waihopai Valley Road bridge complete, pavement preparation work continues. The bridge was sealed this week and work on the road approach is also underway. 

This work will be carried out under stop/go traffic management over the coming weeks. Please plan ahead for minor delays. The current bailey bridge will continue to operate while finishing works are completed.
