President's Message

Jeff Husa, DVM, DABVP (Swine Health Management), President

Hello everyone.

I’ve been hacked! Well, actually someone is using my title for phishing which, by the way, does not qualify for Fish Practice MOC points. No, I’ll never ask you to “carry out an official confidential duty for me.” I’ll also likely never use the word “urgent” in a message unless it pertains to the aftereffects of an amateur chili cook-off. Sorry Mike. Thanks for your confidential help. I’ll stop using your credit card now if you urgently need me to!

This month, we really do have an urgent request. We ask you to pitch in and help ABVP. Volunteers are desperately needed to serve on our Outreach, Credentials, and MOC committees. When everyone contributes a little, no one has to contribute a lot. Outreach is seeking Vice Chairs for Canine/Feline, Reptile/Amphibian, Exotic Companion Mammal, Avian, and Shelter. Credentials needs a Vice Chair for Canine/Feline. MOC needs committee members in general. And we need mentors for Avian, Reptile/Amphibian, Exotic Companion Mammal, Fish Practice, and more. If these don’t pique your interest, let us know and we’ll help you find a way to support ABVP that fits your talents and passions. Please click on the volunteer button below to help out. Thanks!

Finally, our 2025 Symposium is drawing near. Early Bird registration is open through February 16th. Make sure to register and book your room now. Come join us on the River Walk in San Antonio for learning, sharing, and networking. I hope to see y’all there!

Regards,
Jeff

Points Bucket Full Early? Once you have met your points in a Category, do not continue to submit applications; it just creates extra work for our volunteers.

STOP! If you have completed MOC, do NOT start uploading items before your next cycle begins. They will NOT be counted. This would be like telling the state board of veterinary medicine that I uploaded 60 CE this year, so I should not have to renew for the next 5 years. All points must occur in the cycle that you are in.

Carry-Over Points: You are allowed up to 50 points to “carry-over” to your next cycle. To claim these, be sure to screenshot the points total in your Prolydian account. Save this screenshot and submit it in the Additional Points Category, Carry-Over Points Activity AFTER your next cycle begins. This information will be added to the updated Handbook in 2025.

Points Bucket Full? Once you have met your points in a Category and have a maximum of 50 Carry-Over points, if desired, do not continue to submit applications. It just creates extra work for our volunteers.

Please allow extra time through the holidays.

  • Feel free to email your RVS (specialty) Vice Chair with any questions. They are there to help you. Please do not contact your regent for MOC questions.
  • If you do not get a reply within a week, please contact me. I try to check my email daily. Sometimes work gets in the way, but I will get back to you as soon as I can.

ABVP Student Representative Update

Sarah Eaton, DVM, DABVP (Equine), Outreach Chair

For those who are unfamiliar - the student outreach subcommittee has a pilot program of five veterinary schools where we have established a Student Representative program. These students are at Colorado State University, Purdue, U Penn, Iowa State University, and Hong Kong. They are our boots on the ground for their entire schools. They help us raise awareness of what ABVP is and what it means to become a Diplomate.

We have two returning and three newly onboarded student representatives this 2024-25 school year. Our returning reps are Haily S. (CSU) and Jesus G. (Purdue). Many of you may remember Haily (interest in the ECM RVS) from the Symposium last year. They have already started to spread the word about ABVP during their start-of-school-year activities. The fall semester will also be a time that our representatives will set up species-based ‘Lunch and Learns’ for the student body. If you are in these areas and would like to participate - please let the Outreach Committee know!! We would appreciate any help.

The spring semester will be a time for our representatives to advertise the ABVP Symposium and disseminate information regarding the ABVP Foundation/French Fellowship to get more students involved with our Symposium. They have been instrumental in getting the French Fellowship application to their respective student bodies. Last year we had the highest number of applications from schools that had student reps. Additionally, we were able to secure sponsorship to get our state-side student reps to the 2025 symposium. We look forward to you being able to meet them in San Antonio. Feel free to ask them about their hard work at each of their schools.

Review Your Leadership

ABVP's Leadership Development Committee is tasked with a variety of functions. One is to review current leadership and determine strengths and weaknesses so that we can help our volunteers to be better at their jobs.

Please be on the lookout for a survey in your inbox in the next month.

Streamlined Credentialing Pathway

Have you considered becoming double (or triple) boarded? Now there is an easier way to do just that! ABVP has a streamlined credentialing pathway for existing Diplomates. Rather than earning 100 case points in a different RVS, current ABVP Diplomates seeking an additional board certification in a different RVS are only required to earn 50 case points via either one (1) case report, five (5) case summaries (may submit up to 6) or 1 publication (may submit up to 2) to pass credentialing. See the 2024 ABVP Applicant Handbook for more information.

In Memoriam: Leo Sage, DVM, PhD, DABVP (Canine & Feline)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Leo Sage, DVM, PhD. Dr. Sage earned his ABVP Diplomate status in Canine and Feline Practice in 2021, a testament to his dedication to provide the upmost level of care to companion animals. He was also an active participant in the Emergency Practice Fellowship.
