The end is in sight

We are excited to say that the Pito-One to Melling section of Te Ara Tupua is nearing completion. We hope to let you know more details about its opening as we get closer to the finish line.

Pito-One to Melling is a milestone achievement for Te Ara Tupua overall. It adds 3.5km of safe, separated cycleway along with some shared pathways to the Hutt Valley.

We are confident it will be well utilised in future as Te Ara Tupua is completed, eventually joining the Ngā Ūranga to Pito-One and connecting to the Hutt Road and Thorndon Quay cycleways. It's also exciting to think how it will later join cycling and pedestrian infrastructure to be built as part of RiverLink.

At this point in the project, we'd love to say a huge thanks to those who’ve been living with us in their backyards since 2019.

We know it’s been tough at times, despite our team’s best efforts, but we really appreciated the patience and understanding you’ve shown us throughout the project.

Just a few more months to go.

Fulton Hogan update

A lot has happened since our last update and we're going to be pushing hard over the coming months as we round out the project.

Petone Park & Ride

At the moment one of our priorities is completing the shared section of path which runs through the Petone train station car park. This work includes finalising the signage and line marking now that the new car park layout and surfacing is in place. We hope to have this completed by the end of March.

Hutt Road and Parliament Street

Construction of the pump stations on Parliament Street and Hutt Road are the last significant works remaining on the project.

These facilities will help discharge rain water from the underpasses into the storm water network.

As works continue, you will see some traffic management in place along Parliament Street and the Hutt Road near to where the underpasses are. This is to ensure the safety of our crews and other road users.

The anticipated duration for this work is approximately three months and during this time some on street parking will be removed.

State Highway 2

Works are also underway on the new concrete barrier installation along SH2 near the Normandale Bridge. This work is expected to be completed by April and will remove the temporary traffic management and speed limit on the state highway.

This will be followed by finishing works, including asphalt surfacing, line marking, and the installation of CCTV cameras along the cycleway.

New car park layout

As Fulton Hogan's work wraps up in the Petone train station car park, there will be some changes to the layout and where you can park.

We will continue to keep you updated as this work is completed. In the meantime, please follow the current road layout.

Remember there are still plenty of options for parking on the station side of the motorway – including a new park and ride area on the southern side of McKenzie Ave which has 68 car parks. Existing car parks on the otherside of the SH2 are also still available.

Getting familiar with the route

It’s important to remember that the bulk of the Pito-One to Melling section of Te Ara Tupua is a cycleway, while parts at each end are shared pathways.

We'll have some more information to share as we get closer to opening. This will include a couple of maps and videos to help ensure you are familiar with the route and some of the key transitional areas.

Ngā Ūranga to Pito-One works to begin soon

Not only will Te Ara Tupua be a great a new walking and cycling link between Wellington and Lower Hutt – it will help build a more resilient State Highway 2 and railway corridor.

Making our coastal infrastructure stronger is essential in the face of our changing climate. The extreme weather of the past month has shown us what we need to prepare for.
Better walking and cycling options will help reduce emissions, while the new path will better protect the rail line from storm and sea surges, also providing future proofing for sea level rise.

The project is ramping up with work on Honiana Te Puni Reserve and offshore construction on Te Whanganui a Tara expected to begin soon.
