Looking Ahead: Project Update and What’s Next in 2026

22 December 2025

Kia ora koutou,

As we head into the holiday season, we wanted to share a quick update on the East West Link project.

Our team is continuing to progress site investigations, design refinement work, and targeted engagement activities with key stakeholders to make sure the project aligns with strategic priorities and delivers the best outcomes.

We’ll be back in the new year with more updates and opportunities to connect, including dedicated engagement sessions where you can share insights and ask questions. Keep an eye out for details early in 2026.

Progress update, priorities, and how we shaped the preferred (revised) option:
In light of changes to Government policy, we built on previous work to revisit earlier plans alongside new options to ensure the revised project reflects today’s priorities to support growth, enhance productivity and improve east–west connectivity.

To do this, we assessed options against key factors such as transport performance, environmental considerations, cost, deliverability and community outcomes.

Through this process, we identified a preferred inland route with a staged delivery approach, which is now being refined through further technical assessments and targeted engagement.

The East West Link project has become an inland-leaning urban route that reuses more existing corridors, reduces the environmental impact, can be delivered in stages, and aims to deliver equal transport benefits with lower cost and far less disruption.

The next 12-months will involve more design work to develop, refine and route protect the preferred corridor, whilst looking at ways to stage sections of the project with a focus on Stage 1, Galway Link.

What’s coming up in 2026:

  • Finalising design refinements for Stage 1 based on feedback and investigations
  • Sharing updated project visuals and plans
  • Hosting stakeholder engagement sessions for input and discussion
  • Confirming key timelines and next steps

In the meantime, we’d like to thank you for your ongoing interest in the project.

From all of us, we wish you and your whānau a safe, happy, and relaxing holiday season. We look forward to continuing this important work together in the new year.
