Kia ora and welcome

Welcome to the Northland state highway maintenance roadworks update.

This newsletter covers maintenance and renewal roadworks across the state highway network from Topuni all the way to Te Reinga Wairua (Cape Reinga).

That’s a wrap on Northland’s biggest summer season to date of road renewals and maintenance! Check out the story below for more information.

Now that the major summer programme has finished, the frequency of this newsletter will change. Over the winter months, we’ll share updates as needed and resume regular weekly updates from around September when the next season gets underway.

Essential maintenance like unblocking drains, clearing vegetation, and patching potholes will continue over winter to keep roads safe and reliable.

We know roadworks can be disruptive, and we appreciate your patience while we carried out these improvements.

Ngā mihi nui,
The NZTA Northland team

2024-2025 road renewal season wrap-up

We’ve completed the first year of the most significant road rebuild programmes ever in Te Tai Tokerau Northland (across the 2024-2027 National Land Transport (NLTP) period). Over the past 9 months, roadworkers have been working across the region to improve road conditions and enhance safety.

Over the 2024-2025 season (Sep 2024 – May 2025), we’ve rebuilt approximately 26.01 lane km* of road, resurfaced 18.52 lane km, and resealed 158.98 lane km (including skid resistance improvements) – totalling approximately 204 lane km of renewed state highways across Northland, that’s the equivalent length of more than 2,000 rugby fields!

April brought record-breaking rainfall to parts of Northland, and our contractors were out in challenging conditions responding quickly to slips, fallen trees, surface flooding and other impacts, while keeping major road rebuild projects moving where possible. Roadworkers also quickly cleared a slip on SH1 Brynderwyn Hills, a critical route for both people and freight.

Thanks to the many roadworkers for their tremendous work improving the roads.

Preparing for winter works

While major summer works are now complete, our Northland maintenance teams don’t go into hibernation over winter. Even though the colder and wetter conditions aren’t suitable for road resealing, there’s still plenty to do.

During winter, we focus on essential tasks to keep roads open like unblocking drains in flood-prone areas, clearing roadside vegetation, and patching potholes to keep roads safe for everyone.

It’s all about keeping roads in the best state possible until the proper remedial work can begin again in the spring.

When you're on the road in winter, remember to reduce your speed in wet and foggy conditions, allow extra following distance and check your vehicle’s tyres and wipers before heading out.

Slow down, stay alert and make sure you report any potholes so we can get them sorted. Call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49) to let us know about any issues on the state highway network.

Stay updated on road conditions before you travel at https://journeys.nzta.govt.nz/.

*Note: Lane kilometres count the number of lanes on a road rather than just the distance between point A and B. For example, a four-lane 10-kilometre stretch of road has a total of 40 lane kilometres. We measure in this way to give you a more accurate picture of the work being delivered, as it also incorporates things such as passing lanes.
