Tuia a Ranginui e tū iho nei
Tuia a Papatūānuku e takoto ake nei
Tuia i runga, tuia i raro, tuia i roto, tuia i waho

Kāti rā, huri hoki ki a tātou ngā waihōtanga o rātou, kei konei e pūtohe ana kia whakatīnana ai o rātou moemoeā. Tēnā koutou, otirā tēnā rā tātou.

It has been a challenging year for so many of us. Obviously, within the Māori Media Sector, we at Te Māngai Pāho have had it comparatively easy. We try our best to understand how difficult it is for you, the content creators, trying to hold things together in the face of the pandemic, but ultimately most of us are doing so from the comfort of an office in Wellington. Things have changed for us too, we try to be agile and respond to the changing needs of our community. We appreciate our privileged position and are committed to ensuring your voices are heard, your challenges understood and responded to.

We have navigated our way to the end of another year. Let’s hope that 2022 is less challenging and that we can shift our focus from survival to soaring. To once again seeking to search for and realise the big ideas.

The uncertainty created by COVID-19 and a lengthy sector review has adversely impacted the ability of Te Māngai Pāho to plan with certainty. We acknowledge that this has a knock on effect for our content creators and platforms and we are working hard to address that issue. This issue of our pānui includes a timetable for funding rounds for the new financial year. You will understand that before the government’s budget for 2022/23 is published we cannot with certainty indicate the quantum of funding allocated to each funding round. So while we may need to adjust the funds available for allocation in any particular round up or down, our commitment is to not change the dates of those rounds. Hopefully this will assist content creators to plan with a little more certainty.

Ko te tūmanako mā te wā whakangahau, whakangā rānei ō koutou ake ngoi e haumanu ai. Ngā manaakitanga ki a koutou katoa.

Larry Parr,
Kaihautū o Te Māngai Pāho

Draft Funding Calendar 2022/23

Last month, we said that we wanted to share our funding calendar for the 2022/23 financial year to give you as much certainty as possible heading into the new year. While we can't confirm exactly how much funding will be available, and changes may still happen, we wanted to share our draft funding dates with you. Please note, that we cannot confirm the funding rounds and dates until after Budget 2022 has been announced. However we hope that this can provide some certainty over what we want to see in the coming year.

Mēnā he pātai, contact our Head of Funding, Blake Ihimaera - blake@tmp.govt.nz.

Māori radio across the motu

Tūwharetoa FM

Tūwharetoa FM has continued to evolve in a time of uncertainty for local businesses.  They acknowledged their 30th birthday anniversary in February, and will formally celebrate the occasion in the near future.  Other milestones included the introduction of a forward-thinking media platform named Tuituinga Connect that drives all the social media/online content with rangatahi leading this space along with the board and management building a fit-for-purpose facility for this mahi.

Both the on-air and online platforms enhances the services to growing audiences through the engagement of whānau and local communities. All of this, whilst continuing that unique te reo Māori edge Tūwharetoa FM have always maintained.

The team at Tūwharetoa FM has increased to 15 kaimahi, embracing new work-streams including actively engaging on social media. The station also introduced new radio shows including ‘He Pounamu’ where two beautiful kuia kōrero Māori about their childhood and life journeys, and what shaped them into who they are today.

The team says they still have business goals to strive towards and are looking forward to what 2022 brings. Mauri ora!

SoundCheck Aotearoa

SoundCheck Aotearoa have been working on a project to create resources that will help our community to prevent and respond to sexual harassment and harm in the workplace.

A working group with a broad range of experiences was created in order to produce tools, templates, visual resources, and guidance that is specific to artists and managers, venues, promoters, crew, production teams, studios, producers and more.

There is also a new website, which includes more in-depth advice on support services, training, responding to reports of sexual harm, and external resolution options. Check it out here.

Creating a safer and more inclusive music community is something we can all contribute to, and we hope you'll take some time to consider what you can do. Plus, another awesome website has just launched - thechangeover.org - which is full of amazing tools for diversity, equity, and inclusion, particularly when it comes to line-ups, stages and crews.
