Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, proudly delivering the New Zealand Upgrade Programme

SH1 Rolleston transport improvements

31 January 2023

Happy New Year from the project team

We hope everybody has had safe and relaxing holidays and we'd like to let you know work on the business case for Rolleston is nearing the final stages.

Around mid-2023 we expect to start work on more detailed designs and on gaining consents. Construction will be in phases and is expected to get underway in 2025.

Thanks again for the valuable feedback we received last year. Our website has a summary of community engagement and lots of helpful information including updated frequently asked questions.

Gearing up for the new school term

One of the NZ Upgrade Programme components is for a new roundabout at the state highway intersection with Dunns Crossing Road.

This reinforces use of the arterial road on the western periphery of Rolleston, but traffic could have an impact on people accessing the adjacent West Rolleston Primary School as raised by many through consultation feedback.

Waka Kotahi have been working closely with the school principal and Selwyn District Council to come up with a package of work to minimise these risks. The first stage of these improvements outside of the school is underway.

Contractors have been hard at work to complete safety improvements on Dunns Crossing Road in time for the new school year at West Rolleston Primary School.

The footpath on the eastern side of the road is being widened and upgraded to a shared path for walking and cycling. No-stopping lines have also been installed.

The work is the first of a series of improvements to local roads by Selwyn District Council to support the highway upgrades and ensure the whole transport network works effectively.
