Kia ora koutou

Welcome to the latest update on the SH10 Waipapa Corridor Improvements project.

The new roundabout has been fully functional for a few months. We are pleased to see better traffic flow and few problems as road users get used to the new layout.

Work goes on behind the scenes

Some of our work on the Waipapa Corridor intersection project has been happening out of sight recently.

We are nearing the final stages of the remaining elements of this complex and multi-faceted project. This work includes some things you may not be able to see from the main road. Our crews have been finishing new accessways for local businesses, painting line markings on connecting roads and lanes, and building a bridge over the Whiriwhiritoa Stream (see below).

We're now into the winter months and our scheduling has been somewhat complicated by the cooler weather and some heavy rain. We are aiming to officially celebrate the opening of the roundabout within a few months.

Bridge over calm water

A new bridge linking Klinac Lane and Maritime Lane and improving access for shoppers and commercial vehicles to the Waipapa business district is now all but complete.

We started work on the Whiriwhiritoa Stream bridge in March and the construction process, always more challenging over a body of moving water, went very well. Along with taking full advantage of dry weather periods to make progress, we kept our focus on ensuring we did not allow any contamination from construction work into the waterway.

As part of our work at the stream, we have installed new stormwater outlets. They remove sediment from stormwater and slow down its flow before it discharges into the stream. This will help protect the stream from erosion and silting.

We partnered with Ngāti Rēhia to take care of the waterway and to ensure the future health of its habitat. We were honoured to learn more about the cultural importance of this awa/water and the iwi's kaitiakitanga/guardianship over the area.
