Dr Chris Parker highlights his view that LSD is by far and away the most likely exotic disease of ruminants to enter Australia. Australia needs to heed the hard lessons being learned in Europe and act now to avoid a similar, costly fate. Neogen - Is delayed blindness hiding in your herd? Neogen Australasia can now test for the new recessive genetic condition, Delayed Blindness (DB). First reported in 2024, the gene variant responsible for Delayed Blindness is a base pair deletion which causes affected cattle express blindness at approximately 12 months of age. To protect your herd from Delayed Blindness, it is encouraged that all sires and influential donor females are tested. Once you know the status of the animal, you can choose whether to cull them, use them as recipient females, or sell bulls into crossbred operations. Delayed Blindness can be run as a standalone test on new or old samples in storage. If you are testing animals through the Show & Sale Bundle, the Delayed Blindness status of an animal (carrier or non-carrier) will be reported in your results. Visit Neogen’s website for the full range of genomic tests available to Hereford breeders. The Immune Ready Guidelines program continues to gain traction and support throughout the cattle industry. As livestock producers navigate increasing animal health challenges, immune resilience is becoming more important than ever. The Immune Ready Guidelines are endorsed by all the leading industry bodies including AVA, Australian Cattle Veterinarians, MLA, Animal Health Australia, Dairy Australia and Australian Lot Feeders Association as well as all key industry suppliers such as Zoetis Australia.
