What's happening in June

State Highway 1 and Ara Weiti Road

The bridge deck has been poured at the SH1 overbridge and our earthworks team have begun  the on and off-ramps for SH1.

Along Ara Weiti Road the team are continuing to test pavements and will be installing the precast concrete panels on the bridge at Link Road 1. Further along, the retaining wall works by Link Road 2 are also underway.

Stillwater

Works continue on the river piers as they increase in height and we will begin mulching the vegetation on the eastern side of the river which has been cleared for abutment B. We are also continuing the retaining wall works and overbridge tie-ins at Duck Creek Road.

In mid-June there will be a temporary river closure, please see below for more details.

A community information session will be held on Wednesday 23 July from 4-7pm at Stillwater Boat Club.

Whangaparāoa

We will be undertaking nightworks for 5 nights from Sunday 8 June near Wiriana Place. This is to install drainage on Whangaparaoa Road as part of the future intersection. Other utility works are continuing including underground service connections.

On site you will see the two former offices being removed as the team relocates to the portable buildings at the former Cedar Reserve.

Weiti River Bridge

Upcoming river closure

The river closure in May allowed us to continue pouring concrete for Pier 4.

Our next river closure is from 5pm Monday 16 June to 9am Thursday 19 June.

We will provide dates for July in next month's e-news.

The channel closure does not affect vessels navigating the river downstream of the worksite. When the work is complete, we will reopen to the 18-metre-wide navigable gap for vessels to pass through.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank all river users and neighbours for their patience during the ongoing construction of the new Wēiti River Bridge. Should you have any questions regarding this closure, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Recent questions

Will the new overbridge allow for State Highway 1 to be widened in the future?

Yes, the bridge has been designed and constructed to allow for the future plans to widen SH1 between Albany and Silverdale. The widening of SH1 is not part of our project, but you can find the future transport plans for North Auckland by clicking here.

Why is the Whangaparāoa intersection not a roundabout?

A roundabout works well when there is a balanced flow of traffic, however, due to the number of users at this intersection traffic lights are the best option.

At a busy intersection roundabouts do not work well because excessive traffic from one direction with right of way can completely stop all other traffic and cause congestion in other directions.

The intersection design at Whangaparāoa takes all types of road user into consideration, whilst also improving safety, efficiency and stormwater and flood management.

Hutte HBR504 crawler rig

Machinery spotlight - Geotechnical drilling rig

The Hutte HBR504 crawler rig is a specialised piece of machinary for soil and geotechnical drilling, slope stabilisation, micropiles and ground anchors.

This particular rig is approximately 15 tonnes and is remote controlled, making it safer for the driller to operate and manoeuvre. It was brought over from Australia to specifically construct more complex and longer drains that are needed across the project.

In the photos above, the rig is installing reclined bored drains which are up to 72 metres in length with the majority cased due to the complex geology. A cased bore drain has a 'sleeve' which helps to stop the soil from being displaced.
