President's Message

Gary Thompson, DVM, DABVP (Canine and Feline), President

For those with school-age children, this is back-to-school time and with it, the end of summer. My hope is everyone had time to enjoy family, loved ones and friends before getting back to the daily grind of life. The Symposium committee is working diligently to get everything brought together for another great meeting in Baltimore this spring. Once again, I am amazed at the terrific work of Dr. Nollner and her committee. By the time this newsletter hits your inbox, we should have results of the bylaws vote and can start working to streamline the functions of ABVP. The Emergency Practice Fellowship organizing committee is working full steam ahead and it shows great promise for meeting the needs of our diplomates in emergency practice. Personally, the shorter days start to signal the coming of fall an that means more mountain biking and hopefully with the right weather and early start to ski season. As always thank you for the privilege of serving you and this great group of people.

Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Update

Sonnya Dennis, DVM, DABVP (Canine and Feline), MOC Chair

  • The usual shortcuts… ABVP.com, “Member Login” (top bar), then “log in'' (top right). You can “Access MOC Portal” and Journal Club on the left side. The MOC Handbook  is on the MOC webpage.

  • 🚨 RED ALERT!!!! 🚨 If your diplomate certification expires at the end of this year, 2022, and you have not submitted your renewal application, you are ALREADY OVERDUE.

    • Under the old rules, the application for renewal was due in January of the year your certification expires.  This has been extended to July due to a faster turnaround time with the new system.

    • Please contact mocchair@abvp.com if you are not certain of your date, if you intended to renew but have not yet, etc.  I can work with you now, but after December, your only option per the bylaws is to not be a diplomate and go through the process of reinstatement.

  • How do I read my renewal progress? From your Certification Dashboard, you will see “Renewal Progress” on the right side.  (Numbers correspond to the screenshot below.)

  1. This tells you when you expire.  Remember, renewal is due 6 months before expiration to allow the Vice Chairs time to review submissions.

  2. This is an overall point count for ALL CATEGORIES.  DO NOT use this.

  3. Click on the “i” next to “Progress” to see an expanded view of categories.

  4. This shows your progress for Journal Club. Hover over the “i” to see actual numbers.

  5. This shows your progress on your Required CE Category. Hovering over the “i” shows that this person has 145.5 CE credits out of a required 250.

NOTA BENE: You must have all your points for EACH CATEGORY (Required CE, Additional Points, and Journal Club). You cannot use extra points in the Additional Category to fulfill your CE requirements, but you can use extra CE to fulfill your Additional Points. Once the green points bar for Required CE shows as full, then you can enter CE under the Additional Points Category.

Emergency Practice Fellowship

ABVP is pleased to report the creation of a new Fellowship in Emergency Practice!

What is a Fellowship/Fellow? A Fellowship is a period of advanced study in a narrow focus of a veterinary specialty. A Fellow is an individual who has completed this training period after completion of board certification in a veterinary specialty (ABVP Canine and Feline Practice or Feline Practice).
The goal of creation of the Emergency Practice fellowship is to allow ER clinicians to change what it means to be an ER vet, create a positive impact on the retention of seasoned and experienced ER doctors, and allow for more collaboration with other specialists (for the ultimate good of serving our patients and owner's needs). By creation of this Fellowship, it is also growing the numbers of ABVP Diplomates within our organization. Prior to this endeavor, many ER clinicians may not have appreciated the benefit of board certification with ABVP.

Additional information regarding completion of this Fellowship is forthcoming on the ABVP website (as well as Facebook).
