Work on the Waimakariri Bridge going well

The work on the bridge is going very well, we have already applied a new surface where we can, and we are working on the bridge joints (where you see the rolled up black rubber in the photo).

We need to do some additional work on the bridge abutments which will require a concrete pour.  While the concrete is curing you may not see many workers on the bridge –sometimes waiting is part of the job ;-)

Due to this additional work on the bridge abutments, we need access for trucks and machinery on Monday and Tuesday night. This means we will be closing the Tram Road On-ramp from 7pm (14 and 15 September) on both nights and it will not reopen until the following mornings (15 and 16 September) at about 9.30am after the morning traffic peak.

All going well, we expect to shift southbound traffic back to the ‘old’ freshly resealed lanes on Sunday night 20 September, about a week ahead of schedule!

Grimseys/Prestons Intersection lane closure

Monday 14 September till Monday 21 September, the southbound lane on Grimseys Road, between Dunbarton Street and Prestons Road will be closed.  This will allow us to complete the road tie-ins and construct the kerb around the northeast corner.

Due to the traffic island on Grimseys Road there is not enough space to shift the traffic so a lane closure is the only safe option.

Southbound traffic on Grimseys Road heading towards Prestons Road will be diverted via Lowry Avenue and Main North Road. The lane closure does not affect traffic on Prestons Road and northbound traffic on Grimseys Road.

Two bus stops will be closed on Grimseys Road: at the corner with Prestons Road and near Exton Street. The bus will continue to stop on Grimseys Road near Dunbarton Street and Mulberry Place.

Gantry installation SH1 - going well

The gantry installations are also steaming ahead, we managed to install all but one of the legs for the gantries on the southbound side of the motorway, on the first three nights of planned work. The next traffic impact is a northbound lane reduction on the night of 16 September, as planned.

On 30 September all motorway traffic (north and southbound) will be diverted.

The lane closures or diversions stay in place from 10pm till about 5am. With lane reductions, lane closures and traffic diverted, movements will be slow, please expect delays at night.

When traffic is reduced to one lane, there will be a 60km/h speed limit in place. High winds or very poor weather could move or extend these dates.

The full night work schedule and project update is here.
