SH2 safety improvement works in Central Hawke’s Bay set to re-start with new working conditions
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is resuming the safety improvement works between Pakipaki and Waipukurau after ANZAC weeked.
Rob Partridge, Senior Project Manager (Complex), says the new working conditions under Alert Level 3 means progress on site will be slower than previously.
“Unfortunately, the remaining activities are going to take longer to complete than we had estimated in March due to health and safety requirements being put in place for various COVID-19 alert levels. We estimate that the impacts of COVID-19 will see completion of this section pushed out to the end of July.”
Mr Partridge says Waka Kotahi is working hard to get the work done, while keeping everyone safe. “When there is the opportunity to move with more speed, we will do so. Until then, the health and safety of our employees, contractors and community is paramount.”
The initial focus will be to complete the section between Waipukurau and Waipawa, including a retaining wall. The slow vehicle bay is nearly complete and now only requires sweeping and road markings to finish this area. When the retaining wall, slow vehicle bay, road marking and rumble strips between Waipukurau and Waipawa are complete, we will then finish barrier installation in the designated areas between Waipawa and Pakipaki.
There has been some interest in what the completed SH2/Tapairu Road intersections will look like when the barriers have been installed. The render attached shows the two Tapairu intersections and what they will look like once finished.
It is important to note that there will be no right turn in or out of the northern end intersection (closest to Waipawa). At the southern end there will be a slip lane to turn left into Tapairu Road, and a wide shoulder to allow traffic turning out enough time to accelerate. At this intersection traffic will also be able to make a right turn in and out of Tapairu Road.
