Te Ara Tūtohu: Waitara to Bell Block

7 October 2022

Princess Street intersection

Kia ora,

The detour route for light vehicles through Waitara, which was in place to allow the installation of stormwater infrastructure at the SH3/Princess Street intersection, has been removed as we have sealed the road 200 metres south of the intersection.

All traffic will now use SH3 under stop/go traffic lights from approx. 200 metres north of Mamaku Road to approx. 200 metres south of Princess Street. During peak traffic, the lights may be replaced with manual stop/go paddles to minimise traffic build up. Delays are expected to be no more than 5 minutes.

We have also removed the temporary safety improvements on the detour route as these were only required to manage higher traffic volumes while the detour was in place.

The pedestrian crossing at North Street (near Manukorhi Intermediate School) will remain at the request of New Plymouth District Council.

We expect to complete these stormwater works by November, at which point the road will return to two lanes.

Waka Kotahi thanks road users and local residents for their patience and cooperation while we undertake these important works.

Community drop-in sessions

We had a great turnout to the drop-in sessions held last month, with the project team speaking with around 120 people across the four sessions held in Waitara, Bell Block Puke Ariki and the Seaside Market.

The sessions were an opportunity for people to learn more about the safety improvements planned for the route. It was wonderful to meet with the community face to face and we appreciate the comments that were shared.
