‘Trust of the Year’: Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust shortlisted at HSJ Awards 2026

We have been shortlisted in the category of Trust of the Year at the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards 2026. This award category considers every aspect of the organisation and recognises excellence across the board.

The Trust has had an incredible year with national recognition ensuring they stand out from their peers. Of this national recognition, most notably the Trust was placed in the top segment of the NHS National Oversight Framework leagues and sat in fourth place nationally in the Mental Health and Community Trust league table. As part of the Trust’s extensive staff wellbeing initiatives they also achieved second place nationally for their Flu Vaccination programme for frontline staff uptake.

Evidence of the Trust’s clinical innovation and focus has been shown in an extensive range of services including their reduction of waiting lists and work to drive rates to breastfeeding up so that Hull is now a predominantly breastfed City.

Our Trust Shortlisted for Two National Patient Safety Award

Our Trust has been shortlisted for two projects at the 2026 HSJ Patient Safety Awards.

A Bleed Support and Care Box initiative has been shortlisted in the Palliative and End of Life Safety Initiative of the Year category. The Trust’s Palliative and End of Life Care team introduced Bleed Support and Care Boxes to help bring dignity, comfort and a sense of preparedness to families facing the risk of a catastrophic bleed. The boxes were thoughtfully co-produced with a relative whose family experience ensured the items inside reflect real lived experience and what truly matters in those moments.

The project was funded by Trust Charity Health Stars. The boxes can be offered in advance to patients identified as being high risk and include a dark towel, dark fleece blanket for warmth and comfort, aprons, gloves and a leaflet to support those living with the risk of bleeding.

The second shortlisted project came from our Neurodiversity service for their Core Needs initiative This project was shortlisted in the category of Patient Safety Pilot Project of the Year.

Children’s Neurodiversity Project Shortlisted for Three Prestigious Nursing Times Awards

The project known as ‘Core Needs’ was developed by Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust’s Neurodiversity team and has now been shortlisted in three categories of the Nursing Times Awards 2026, on top of a recent shortlisting in the HSJ Patient Safety Awards.

The Core Needs project centres around working with SENDCO (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinators) within schools to offer a quick response to the requirements of children with neurodiversity. SENDCO’s in identified schools across Hull and East Riding can refer children to the Neurodiversity team for a one-off, needs-led appointment and they will look at what support and adjustments can be put in place for individual children.

By addressing these needs within the school, children can remain in their familiar environment and be seen much faster. The 14 schools that have been involved in this project to date were identified as those with the greatest need and the highest likelihood of referrals.

The project is receiving national recognition now having been shortlisted for an incredible three categories within the Nursing Times Awards 2026. The project has been shortlisted in the following categories:

- Children's Services

- Dame Elizabeth Anionwu Award for Inclusivity in Nursing and Midwifery

- Nursing in Mental Health

The Nursing Times Awards celebrate excellence across the nursing profession, recognising individuals and teams who drive innovation, improving patient care and making a lasting difference to communities across the UK. Being shortlisted across three categories reflects the project's commitment to collaboration and delivering high-quality care that places the needs of children, young people and families at its heart.

Adult Inpatient Redesign Project - Public Consultation Event

The local community and residents had the opportunity to view and comment on proposed redevelopment plans for our Trust's Willerby site at a public consultation event held on 24 August 2026. The drop in event ran from 3pm to 7pm at the Trust’s Lecture Theatre in Willerby, HU10 6FE. 

The proposals presented at the event formed part of the Trust's long-term Adult Mental Health Inpatient Redevelopment Programme, which aims to consider options for modernising mental health inpatient facilities across Hull and East Yorkshire. 

The Trust is currently preparing a planning application for the site. This consultation event gave local people an opportunity to view the emerging proposals, ask questions and provide feedback before the application is finalised and submitted for permissions. 

The plans being consulted on relate to the redevelopment of the Willerby site, including future building phases, access arrangements, parking, landscaping and infrastructure. Feedback received will help inform the final planning application. 

It is important to note that the consultation is about redevelopment proposals for the site and not about changes to mental health services. Any future proposals to relocate services would be considered separately through the NHS's formal service change process, including public engagement and consultation where required. 

Existing inpatient services will continue to operate throughout the planning process and any future construction programme, with no impact on the care currently provided to patients. 

NHS Alliance’s Trust Visit: “A huge privilege to be here today”

We recently had the pleasure of hosting representatives from NHS Alliance, the independent membership body that represents and supports the health and care system in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. NHS Alliance Chief Executive Sir Ciarán Devane and Director Matthew Hopkins, visited the Humber Suite at Hull Royal Infirmary’s (HRI) Emergency Department and attended a showcase of Trust services at Trust HQ.

Throughout their visit, the representatives expressed how impressed they were with the level of professionalism and passion that was clear from every staff member they spoke with and every team they met.

The Humber Suite within HRI Emergency Department is an innovation in mental health support within an acute setting. Patients presenting with mental health needs, once assessed for any acute health needs, can be streamed to the calm space of the Suite for further assessment. The dedication of the team who made this happen has meant this service can exist at the heart of where they are needed.

East Riding Mental Health Advice and Guidance Service

The East Riding Primary Care Mental Health Network (PCMHN) provides early intervention, assessment, advice and support for adults experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties. The service works closely with GP practices, community services and specialist mental health teams to ensure people receive timely access to appropriate support.

The East Riding Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) provides specialist assessment, treatment and ongoing support for adults with severe, complex or enduring mental health conditions. The multidisciplinary team includes psychiatrists, mental health nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers and support workers who help individuals manage their mental health and maintain independence within their communities.

What is changing?

From 1 September 2026, an Advice and Guidance Service will be introduced for all East Riding GP practices as part of a wider programme to strengthen access to specialist mental health expertise within primary care.

Delivered by ER Medics, working in partnership with pharmacy colleagues, the service will provide GPs with timely access to specialist advice and clinical expertise to support patient care within primary care settings.

The service will enable GPs to:

• Access specialist advice on mental health care and treatment options.
• Receive support with medication optimisation and prescribing queries.
• Benefit from pharmacy expertise in medicines management, polypharmacy and formulary adherence.
• Access multidisciplinary clinical guidance to support informed clinical decision-making.

By improving access to specialist advice, the service aims to support safe, effective and consistent care, enhance the patient experience and ensure people receive the most appropriate support without unnecessary delays.

The Advice and Guidance Service is intended to support clinical decision-making within primary care and does not replace existing referral pathways where specialist mental health assessment or intervention is required.

What is not changing?

• Existing CMHT and PCMHN services will continue to operate as usual.
• Patients will continue to access mental health support through established referral pathways.
• Specialist assessment, treatment and ongoing support provided by CMHT and PCMHN will remain unchanged.
• Access to secondary and specialist mental health services will continue in line with existing eligibility criteria and referral processes.

Why is this change being made?
This change builds on a successful pilot in Bridlington that has demonstrated positive outcomes for patients and primary care colleagues. The experience gained through the pilot has provided confidence that the model can now be implemented across the whole of the East Riding.

The Advice and Guidance Service complements existing community and specialist mental health services and forms part of a wider system approach to improving access to mental health expertise, supporting timely and effective care closer to home where appropriate.

Benefits for Patients, GPs and the Wider System
The new Advice and Guidance Service will provide GPs with faster access to specialist mental health expertise, supporting timely clinical decision-making, treatment planning and medication-related queries. Access to multidisciplinary advice, including pharmacy support, will help clinicians manage patients safely and effectively within primary care where appropriate, while strengthening medicines optimisation and promoting safe prescribing practices.

Patients will benefit from more timely and coordinated support, with improved access to the most appropriate care and treatment without unnecessary delays. Closer collaboration between primary care, mental health services and pharmacy teams will enhance continuity of care and ensure specialist input is available when needed to support care planning and treatment decisions.

For the wider health and care system, the service will strengthen collaboration across organisations, support more consistent approaches to patient care, reduce unnecessary referrals and enable specialist mental health resources to be used more effectively. By making best use of multidisciplinary expertise, the service will support quality, safety and workforce sustainability, helping to ensure people receive the right support from the right service at the right time.

East Riding HealthiER Referrals Becomes the First Social Prescribing Service to Access the YHCR Through Interweave

The East Riding HealthiER Referrals programme has become the first social prescribing partner to go live with the Yorkshire & Humber Care Record (YHCR), powered by Interweave which is hosted by Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust. This marks another important milestone in extending connected care beyond traditional NHS settings. 

HealthiER Referrals supports people referred by their GP into local leisure and wellbeing services, helping residents improve their physical and mental health through tailored activity and lifestyle support.  

'Hear the Story' a New Trust Podcast Series

Hear the Story, is a new Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust podcast series that brings together the voices of colleagues and people with lived experience to explore how understanding people's stories can improve care.

It has been created as part of our wider See the Story campaign, which supports the work of our Care Culture and Equity Group, bringing together trauma informed care, health inequalities, the Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework (PCREF) and Culture of Care.

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust AMM & AGM 2026

On Thursday 1st October 2026, Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust is inviting public to attend their Annual Members Meeting (AMM) and Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Trust HQ Lecture Theatre, Willerby Hill. The event showcases the exceptional work taking place by services across the Trust, while also sharing news of future innovations alongside achievements of the past 12 months.

The Annual Member’s Meeting, alongside the AGM, is the Trust’s opportunity to present their finances from the past year, as well as to share news, updates and projections for the future.

This year, the Trust welcomes local boxer Tommy Coyle to the stage to share his experiences of supporting the local community and his passion for helping people understand the positive impact physical activity can have on mental health and wellbeing. Tommy will speak about his work through his running clubs, gyms and charitable activities, and his commitment to creating opportunities for people in the local community to get active and connected. Alongside this, the Trust’s Chief Executive and Trust Chair will celebrate the incredible teams who make a real difference to patients every day.

We also have our marketplace event happening 12pm-2pm, come along and speak to our staff and hear more information about our services.

Friends and Family Test

The Friends and Family Test (FFT) is an important feedback tool that supports the fundamental principle that people who use NHS services should have the opportunity to provide feedback on their experience. It provides a mechanism to highlight patient experience and is vital in transforming NHS services, supporting patient choice and implementing changes based on your feedback.

Each month we will be sharing patient experiences from our different services, alongside a patient comment.
