Tobacco Licences have commenced

The Victorian Government is encouraging all tobacco retailers and wholesalers to submit an application for a tobacco licence prior to the commencement of the state's new licensing scheme on 1 February 2026.

More than 3,300 businesses have already applied, and those who submit before the deadline can continue trading while their application is assessed.

New rules for branded SMS

Businesses and organisations sending branded text messages with sender IDs, including SMEs, not-for-profits, or agencies, must register sender IDs with their telco or message provider before July 1, 2026.

Failure to do so may result in your text messages being classified as 'Unverified' and grouped with other 'Unverified' messages, including scams, on mobile devices.

Protect your intellectual property (IP)

IP First Response is a free tool aiding small and medium-sized businesses and IP rights holders in understanding IP enforcement options. Initiated by IP Australia, the tool helps users assess risks, benefits, costs, and outcomes of enforcement methods. It also guides on actions to take if accused of copying someone's IP.

Agriculture Victoria's free farm visits

For help with new food safety standards, Agriculture Victoria offers free on-farm visits to berry, leafy vegetable, and melon growers. These visits are for education only, not compliance or audits. Are you prepared for PayDay Super?

Starting July 1, 2026, employers must pay super guarantee to employees on payday with their salary. ATO released a fact sheet for employers on key changes. Details on qualifying earnings are online. The Small Business Superannuation Clearing House will close permanently from July 1, 2026 under PayDay Super reform.   • The Closing Loopholes Fair Work Act amendments are being reviewed. Businesses are invited to have their say on the changes through a consultation, open until 26 March.
  • A new version of the Fixed Term Contract Information Statement has been published.
  • A discussion paper has been released about the proposed Secure Australian Jobs Code. Submissions are open until 20 February, and businesses are encouraged to provide feedback.
  • The National AI Plan was published on 2 December 2025, outlining the Government's plan to grow the AI industry in Australia.

For assistance with business finances, contact the Small Business Debt Helpline. Their financial counsellors offer free, confidential advice to small business owners nationwide. Services include debt understanding, grant access, viability assessment, disaster relief information, payment arrangements guidance, closure advice, dispute resolution help, and emotional support.
