The 2024 Carleton University Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition Is On! 

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) at Carleton is a university-wide competition for graduate students in which participants present their research and its wider impact in 3 minutes or less to a panel of non-specialist judges. The challenge is to present complex research in an accessible and compelling way, with the assistance of only one static slide. Check out last year's competition here!

The Carleton 3MT competition will be held in person in March 2024.

Participants will compete for the following prizes:
First place: $1,000
Second place: $500
Third place: $250
“People’s Choice” prize: $150

 

Carleton's Free Tax Clinic is Open for Students!

Worried about filing your taxes this year? Don't be! The Sprott Tax Students' Association (STSA) is here to help with their annual tax clinic.

To file your taxes with the tax clinic, you must first fill out the tax clinic's client intake form. Once you fill out this form, STSAs’ tax clinic team will review it to determine the complexity of your tax return and whether it is within the scope of the tax clinic. You will receive an email indicating whether your tax return is simple enough to be filed with the tax clinic and you will then be given a link to book an appointment.

Note: all appointments at the tax clinic will be held between March 25 and April 2, 2024. For more information, please visit the tax clinic's webpage. 

All tax returns are filed at no cost. The tax clinic is run as a free community service. For any questions, please reach out to director.custsa@gmail.com

 

Awards and Funding 

Internal Nominations for SSHRC Impact Award Due Jan. 23
Carleton’s office for Research Initiatives and Services (CORIS) is accepting nominations for the SSHRC Impact Talent Award.  Valued at $50,000, the Talent Award recognizes outstanding achievement by an individual who, on April 1, 2024, holds a SSHRC doctoral scholarship or fellowship or postdoctoral fellowship. This includes, but is not limited to, a Canada Graduate Scholarship, Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship or Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship. The Talent Award is given to an individual who maintains academic excellence, has a talent for research and knowledge mobilization, and has demonstrated clear potential to be a future leader within and/or outside the academic sector.

Faculty, including graduate and postdoctoral supervisors, are invited to submit an internal registration form for an eligible trainee. Self-nominations are also accepted. The deadline to submit an internal registration form is Jan. 23, 2024.

    New Association with Horizon Europe Signals Unprecedented Potential for Research

    Researchers in Canada can now apply for funding from Horizon Europe, the EU's flagship program for research and innovation.

    Under this program, Canadians will have equal consideration for funding alongside EU Member States, as well as access to an extensive network of researchers worldwide. With a budget of €95.5 billion, this landmark agreement represents the deepest form of collaboration offered by the European Union.

    Virtual Winter Career Fair on Jan. 24

    All Carleton students and alumni are invited to attend the Virtual Winter Career Fair on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024. The Career Fair will give you the opportunity to chat with recruiters and professionals. Meetings will take place as speed-networking-style conversations (about 10 minutes). This is done primarily through text chat (though some employers may use audio or video calls).

    Writing Support by CSAS

    Join the Centre for Student Academic Support (CSAS) this Winter Term 2024 for their Academic Writing for English Language Learners sessions on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Pick and choose the session that works for you or join all of them! 

    Next session on Jan. 24, 2024 will review types of sentences and punctuation basics. Sessions are available hybrid: in person at 402 MacOdrum Library and on MS Teams.

    Nominations for the 2023-2024 Outstanding TA Awards are Now Open!
    This award celebrates the support TAs give to undergraduate programs in their disciplines, their roles in establishing a positive learning environment and their work in implementing innovative teaching practices. Five TAs will receive a certificate and $250.     Call for Nominations: Recognize the Spirit of Student Volunteerism in Our Community

    Do you know a student who has displayed exceptional volunteerism and community contribution? Nominate them for the 2024 Board Award. The successful candidate will receive a $2,000 reward.     CAGS Workshop Series for Graduate Students and Postdocs

    The Canadian Association for Graduate Studies is holding an Anti-Racism Response Training (ART) workshop on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024 from noon to 3 p.m. (ET) over Zoom. Ticket Price is $50.00 (no tax) and presented in English. 

    This workshop is designed to build awareness around issues of race and racism in Canadian higher education. This workshop will introduce attendees to the concepts of active versus passive witnessing, and help to instil a better understanding of the impacts of racist encounters on both victims and bystanders.

    Let's Talk Lecture on Jan. 25

    The Mental Health and Well-being Research and Training Hub (MeWeRTH) is collaborating with the Department of Psychology to host an in-person Let’s Talk Lecture on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024 from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Southam Hall, Room 304. 

    Dr. Simon Hatcher will give a keynote address entitled, “Trauma Informed Care in the vulnerably housed: What is it and would you recognize it if you saw it?”

    Therapy Dog Program

    The Carleton University Therapy Dog Program is designed to bring positive (or as we say, paws-itive) mental health and wellness supports to our community. All of our dogs are handled by professional staff and faculty members at Carleton, and their Handlers work to create welcoming and supportive environments that can provide low intensity, yet effective coping strategies for mental health and wellness.
