Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency

Whakatipu Active Travel Network

6 June 2024

We're aware some time has passed since we last updated you about the Whakatipu Active Travel Network routes being delivered by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

We've been in a holding pattern for providing an update on progress of the Whakatipu Active Travel Network while we wait for the draft Government Policy Statement on land transport (GPS) to be finalised.

Here's the situation

The GPS outlines the government's plan for investing in land transport over the next 10 years. This is still in draft and the final is expected to be released in June/July 2024.

The National Land Transport Programme (NLTP) is fundamental to the work we deliver as this sets out funding for New Zealand's transport system for the next 3 years. This will be formally adopted on 31 August 2024.

The draft GPS is targeted at boosting economic growth and productivity, increased maintenance and resilience, safety and ensuring value money.

The draft GPS outlines that funding for walking and cycling should focus on areas with existing high activity, and projects are expected to contribute to economic growth and productivity.

Once both the GPS and NLTP are operative, we'll have a clear picture of available funding and government priorities for walking and cycling projects.

The delay isn't ideal, and we know you're eager for progress. We'll provide another update on the Whakatipu Active Travel Network as soon as we have more information, likely in September.
