News & events from Corpus Christi Cambridge No images? Click here News from CorpusThank you to everyone who has made a gift to Corpus this year. And to everyone who might consider doing the same - thank you in advance for your support. Your College needs you! What a glorious end to the Easter Term, after all the hard work of exams! The May Ball, Arcadia, was a resounding success, graduations took place with family and guests in attendance, and alumni events – such as the 1352 Foundation Legacy Society Day, Garden Party, and the 2001-2004 reunion – were joyous community occasions, where alumni, students, the Master, Fellows and staff could interact and enjoy being party of the Corpus family. And Corpus never sleeps during the summer vacation! No sooner were current students off on their adventures, than the round of summer schools and Open Days began. These will be followed by the STEM SMART summer school, and the third Bridging Course in September, with some much-needed conference activity to boost income slotted in between. Rachel Lawson - Fellow, Director of Development and Alumni Relations College NewsAcademic Promotions"Warm and hearty" congratulations from the Master and all of us at Corpus to six of our Fellows who have been given senior academic appointments in this round of the Academic Careers Pathways (ACP) Scheme, taking effect 1 October 2022. Read more about the research, teaching and recent work of Dr Fumiya Iida, Dr Emma Spary, Professor Ewan St. John Smith (left), Dr Shruti Kapila, Dr Rory Naismith and Dr Andrew Sanger. General AdmissionOn Thursday 30 June, the Master, Professor Christopher Kelly, and the Praelector, Dr Jo Wilmott, led the procession of graduating students to the Senate House. Mark Lightning, Porter, led the procession of students along King's Parade, as well as greeting them after the ceremony. It was wonderful to see so many parents and friends enjoying the day - for the first time in a few years. Congratulations graduates!! The evening in Arcadia was full of dancing, music and friends coming together for the first May Ball since 2019. It was a delight to see everyone gathered together and enjoying the evening - and making it through until the Survivors' photo the next morning. Open DaysOn Thursday 7 and Friday 8 July, Corpus opened its doors to prospective students for the first time since 2019. This opportunity allows Year 11 and 12 students and families to visit and find out about studying at Corpus. A huge thank you to the Access and Outreach team who cheerfully gave tours to hundreds of people! Recent EventsIndia at 75Mr Rahul Gandhi, MP and Leader of the Indian National Congress Party attended Cambridge on 23 May to join in conversation with Dr Shruti Kapila, Associate Professor of History and Fellow of Corpus. The highly anticipated event was watched by a full auditorium of students and members of the University, and was recorded in full. 1352 Legacy Society DayOn 11 June, Corpus welcomed back members of the 1352 Foundation Society so we could express our thanks to Society members for making provisions for the College in their wills. The day started with a private tour of the latest Parker Library Exhibition: Matthew Parker's Reformation, followed by Champagne in the Master’s Garden in glorious sunshine. Our Society members enjoyed lunch in the NCR and an update about College and conversation with the Master in the afternoon. After lunch, Professor Fumiya Iida gave a talk about The Agri-Food Robotics Revolution, including an insight into the exciting research of our current students. Garden PartyOn Sunday 19 June, in the beautiful gardens of Leckhampton, we were joined by alumni, Fellows and students with their family and friends. We were delighted with the tricks of Alan the Magician, storytelling and bubbles from members of the Development and alumni Relations Team, garden tours from Head Gardener Andy and ice cream from the Saffron Walden Company (strawberry was the favourite flavour!). The alumni Jazz band soothed us with music as guests enjoyed the atmosphere. We are looking forward to next year already! Lots more photos here. Pencil in the date: Saturday 17 June 2023 Seeking matriculation photosWe recently welcomed our new College Archivist, Dr Genny Silvanus, and she's already delving into Modern Archives to uncover fascinating facts about the 'recent' history of the College. It seems we have a dearth of matriculation photos - with only one from 1911 and then none until 1953. If anyone has copies of our missing matric photos (or any other College memorabilia you'd like to share), please email archivist@corpus.cam.ac.uk We want to hear from youWe are gathering news for the next edition of The Record and we want to share what you've been up to. Got a new academic position, professional promotion, new job, project or publication? Share the news with your fellow Corpuscles. We're also preparing a new edition of The Pelican. In keeping with a sustainable agenda, if you'd prefer not to have a paper copy mailed to you, please let us know if you're happy to read the digital-only version. Upcoming EventsMacCurdy Reunion DinnerWe are looking forward to welcoming you back to Corpus for a reunion dinner for those who matriculated in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 for their undergraduate degree. This will provide a wonderful opportunity to return to College and catch up with old friends. Cambridge FestivalsOpen CambridgeOpen Cambridge will take place from 9 - 18 September. This city-wide festival is a celebration of our community, the heritage, history and stories of Cambridge and the surrounding area. Once again, Corpus is taking part by hosting a dinner in concert with The Office of External Affairs & Communications on 9 June, and by holding an exhibition in the Parker Library on Saturday 10 June, with demonstrations from the Cambridge Colleges Conservation Consortium. This year’s Alumni Festival will run across three days, from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 September. For the first time, it will be a hybrid experience featuring in-person and enhanced digital programming (online and pre-recorded sessions) with an array of fascinating talks, tours and discussions. |
