Life below the water matters... meet the Port Jackson Shark

This egg laying shark is drawn to the shallow waters of Cabbage Tree Bay, Manly. The sheltered habitat allows it to mate and deposit its eggs between June and November.

Protecting the community from the risk of COVID-19 is a key priority for us this summer. We are implementing a COVID-19 Summer Action Plan for Outdoor Public Spaces and we'd love some friendly local volunteers to support its implementation.

Times, locations and days are flexible, with training provided.

Local schools are waste warriors

Our Northern Beaches community is passionate about the environment – and none more so than the eco-conscious students at schools across the area. Three of our local schools are in the running for the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Sustainable Cities Award 2020. Whether they win or not – we think they’re absolute champions!

Backyard blitz for local hostel

Members of our Environment and Climate Change team recently joined forces with a local community garden group to help revitalise the gardens of Biala Girls Hostel in Allambie Heights. The hostel gives Indigenous girls from rural NSW the opportunity to receive a high school education at a Sydney school.

Help conserve our wildlife

The NSW government is asking the community to participate in a survey that will help them better understand the impact of recent bushfires on our precious wildlife. It seeks to understand the distribution of wildlife across NSW, including animals such as the common brushtail possum and echidnas.

Grants boost eco-initiatives

Thirteen worthy recipients received grants for environmental projects including solar installations at surf and bowling clubs, a support program for endangered species and community garden and bush regeneration activities.

A total of $280,000 was awarded overall in our Community Grants program.

Remediating our beaches 

The east coast lows earlier this year caused damage to a number of our beaches. Remediation work involved beach scraping at Newport, where sand is pushed up the beach to accelerate dune recovery. Geotextile sandbags and planting were used at Fisherman's Beach, Collaroy to help remediate the foredune and repair an access walkway.
