Progress update - Tirohanga whānui bridge

By early 2019, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to enjoy a new safe route to cross the Northern Motorway (SH1) from Spencer Road, Pinehill in the East Coast Bays right into the heart of the Albany metro centre. Tirohanga Whānui, meaning panoramic/expansive views, will provide the area with more than a safe walking and cycling connection. Its location has allowed Watercare to install a water main under the deck of the bridge over SH1. This is part of a larger Watercare project to meet the demands of local population growth.

The abutments of the bridge are now complete with the retaining walls, and the installation of pre-cast concrete panels well underway. The steel girders are being made off site in Whangārei and will journey south once complete for installation.

Work to install the bridge is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. See photos of progress below:

Work along Upper Harbour Highway

Our crew has been clearing vegetation and commenced earthworks on the south side of Upper Harbour Highway between Caribbean Drive and Constellation Drive. This work is scheduled to take place each Sunday from 10 June to 8 July.

What will this mean for you?

  • Motorists - Upper Harbour Highway will remain open however there will be a lane closure for traffic heading west.
  • Neighbours - Nearby neighbours may notice an increase in noise levels from trucks and other machinery.
  • Pedestrians - A detour will be in place along Upper Harbour Highway for the duration of the works. Refer to map below.

We thank you in advance for your patience during this time.

Work on McClymonts Road

A two year work programme is underway at McClymonts Road in preparation of a full bridge replacement. The bridge needs to be widened and lifted to make way for an additional traffic lane, busway and shared use path.  Once the new bridge is fully functional the old bridge will be demolished.  The construction crew have set up site and will begin earthworks and bridge piling soon.

What does this mean for you?

  • Motorists - Localised traffic management will be in place and will be well sign-posted.
  • Neighbours - Nearby neighbours may notice an increase in noise due to heavy machinery and trucks moving during our work hours (typically 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and up to 3pm on a Saturday)

We thank you in advance for your patience during this time.
