Progress update - Tirohanga whānui bridge
By early 2019, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to enjoy a new safe route to cross the Northern Motorway (SH1) from Spencer Road, Pinehill in the East Coast Bays right into the heart of the Albany metro centre. Tirohanga Whānui, meaning panoramic/expansive views, will provide the area with more than a safe walking and cycling connection. Its location has allowed Watercare to install a water main under the deck of the bridge over SH1. This is part of a larger Watercare project to meet the demands of local population growth.
The abutments of the bridge are now complete with the retaining walls, and the installation of pre-cast concrete panels well underway. The steel girders are being made off site in Whangārei and will journey south once complete for installation.
Work to install the bridge is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. See photos of progress below:
