Construction update

5 February 2026

We held a team 'back to work' meeting in early January to prepare for the year.

Construction update | He pānui

Kia ora

Happy 2026, we hope you are enjoying summer even if the weather has been changeable.  We've had a couple of good months since our last update.

Read on for progress updates across the project length over the last two months including the successful cutover of the Waikato 1 watermain between Christmas and New Year.  We are also gearing up for the demolition of the Bremner Road bridge over the Southern Motorway, scheduled overnight on Saturday 14 February and into the morning of Sunday 15 February.

Please get in touch if you have any queries about the works shown in this issue or any other aspect of the P2D project – our contact details are shown at the end of this update.

Demolition of Bremner Road overbridge

This month, we will demolish the Bremner Road bridge over SH1. This bridge needs to be demolished as the abutments of the current overbridge are not wide enough to fit extra lanes underneath.

Overnight from 7.30pm on Saturday 14 February to 9.30am on Sunday 15 February, the Bremner Road bridge over SH1 will be fully demolished over an extended 14-hour period.  The motorway will be fully closed in both directions over this time and all motorway traffic will be detoured in both directions along Beach Road and Great South Road (see detour map below).

This 'hard and fast' demolition approach will minimise the overall impact on surrounding residents and motorway users, rather than removing the bridge in small sections over weeks of night works and full closures.

Flanagan Road

In December, between Christmas and New Year, our hardworking team successfully completed cutting over the Waikato 1 watermain into a realigned section of pipe on Flanagan Road as shown above. This watermain supplies water to Auckland from the Waikato River, accounting for around one third of Auckland’s water.

The cutover was delivered during an 18-hour shutdown of the Waikato Treatment Plant. The cutover period was organised with WaterCare to occur when businesses were closed for the holidays and water consumption was low. This meant that there was no disruption in supply to customers during and after the shutdown.

The realignment and cutover of the Waikato 1 watermain was necessary to enable us to ultimately realign Flanagan Road and SH1.

SH1 south of Drury Interchange

Over the past two months, we have been carrying out earthworks near the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) bridges. As shown in the photo above, we have been excavating and removing poor ground materials.

Following this, aggregate and soil will be built up in layers and compacted to form the base of the realigned SH1 between the new Great South Road bridge (in construction, see below) and the NIMT bridges.

Drury Interchange

Over the past two months, our works at Drury Interchange have been focused on the two southbound triangular gore areas in preparation for building the abutments and piers for the new SH1 motorway bridge over Great South Road.

In the gore between the motorway and the Drury southbound off-ramp, we have begun building bridge piles as shown in the photo above. This piling will continue for approximately five months before shifting to piling in the gore on the south side of Great South Road.

SH22 / Great South Road

Over the past two months, we have been rebuilding the southern side of SH22, just west of Drury Interchange.  Works have including carrying out underground service installations, installing kerbs and channels, and general pavement works.

This week we installed a right-turn bay into Victoria Street from SH22. There will still be no right turns permitted out of Victoria Street onto SH22 until the Victoria Street / SH22 / Mercer Street intersection is fully signalised, which is expected later in March.

Bremner Road at Ngaakooroa Stream

The old Bremner Road bridge over Ngaakooroa Stream has now been dismantled and removed with just some piles remaining in the water, visible in the photo above. Some of these remaining piles will be removed later given that they are not hindering our construction of piles for the new bridge for now.

Slippery Creek / Otuuwairoa Stream

During December and January, we continued installing ground improvement piles on the southbound (eastern) side of SH1, north of Slippery Creek. We also installed two large permanent bridge piles in the stream itself at the edge of the stream channel.

This month and next, we will be lifting bridge girders that will form the deck of the bridge onto these piles and the headstocks.
