Westgate Bus Station main works to beginMain works construction is about to begin on a new bus station at Westgate following the awarding of a contract to Built Environs. Main construction will get underway in the coming weeks on the new bus station which will be at the heart of the northwest public transport network, connecting customers with local and express services to and from the city centre as well as around the north west. The station is a key part of the Te Ara Hauāuru - Northwest Busway project which will deliver a busway alongside Auckland's State Highway 16 (SH16) from Brigham Creek to the city centre. Like the successful Northern Busway on Auckland’s North Shore, the Northwest Busway will offer an attractive, reliable public transport option, helping to ease congestion and free up motorway space for freight and others who need it. The start of main construction on this important project is a major milestone. Construction of the station building and its connections to local roads is expected to be completed by mid-2026 and then handed to Auckland Transport to operate services. Enabling works for the Westgate Bus Station are nearly complete, having started earlier this year. These works included bulk earthworks, debris removal, utility installations, and the construction of a large retaining wall to create level ground for the station. The new Westgate station will replace temporary on street bus stops and provide a safe, sheltered environment for passengers. It is designed to accommodate increased bus volumes and enhance service quality, security, and comfort. The station has been future-proofed to support electric bus charging, a future retail kiosk, and expansion to integrate with the upcoming busway along SH16. Funding for the Westgate Bus Station has been provided through the Government’s Infrastructure Reference Group (IRG), enabling early delivery of the local portion of the project. Northwest Busway project mapWe’ve recently updated the Northwest Busway project map to show the preferred side of the SH16 corridor for the future busway. As shown in the map below, the busway will be on the southern side of SH16 from Brigham Creek to Te Atatū, with stations at Brigham Creek, Westgate, Royal Road, Lincoln Road and Te Atatū. Along the causeway buses will run on enhanced bus shoulder lanes during peak congestion. Between Point Chevalier and Western Springs the busway will be on the northern side of SH16, before connecting into the city centre. In the city centre, buses will be street running, using existing streets and bus stops. Like the Northern Busway, the busway and stations are expected to be built and opened in stages to start delivering benefits as early as possible, making best use of existing infrastructure and providing value for money.ng infrastructure and providing value for money. Northwest Busway landowner lettersRecently, the project team sent letters to landowners of properties within the preferred project corridor. A preferred project corridor is the area that we expect a project to be constructed within, in the future. There is further work required to refine the preferred project corridor which will be completed over the coming months. Further technical analysis and design development needs to be carried out over the coming months to refine the preferred project corridor before we are able to confirm with landowners whether their property is directly affected or not. If you are a landowner who received one of these letters – or if you’re unsure and would like to check – please get in touch with the project team using the contact details provided below. Next stepsNZTA intends to lodge the Notices of Requirement and other statutory approvals for this project, likely via the Fast-track Approvals Act, by the end of this year. Obtaining the statutory approvals for the project means that NZTA can construct the project in stages as funding is available. It also provides property owners, businesses and the community with certainty on where transport routes will be in the future. We are planning some community drop-in information sessions for July and August. We will provide more details including where and when closer to the time. We look forward to seeing you at these information sessions and hearing your thoughts. |
