1. Sealing begins in the north

Story
Story

Sealing has begun on the new expressway in the north. First the rock pavement is sprayed with a prime coat compound to bind the surface layer. Then emulsified bitumen is sprayed and overlaid with stone chip. Chip sealing began this month around the Resolution Interchange at Horsham Downs. A final smooth layer of asphalt will be laid on top of the chip seal.

2. Completing the bridge approaches

The approaches to the bridge at the Resolution Interchange near Horsham Downs have just been completed. The video below shows the final concrete panels being placed. Long galvanised steel straps will be placed to tie the panels in to the sand being compacted on the inside of the panel wall.

3. Underpass taking shape

The underpass that will take Powells Road under the expressway is progressing well. The main concrete walls were poured this month. This leaves the eastern wing walls to be built offsite and lifted into place, and the final roof slabs to be formed and poured on site. Once the underpass is complete, the expressway will be built on top.

5. Asphalt plant up and running soon

Commissioning of the new asphalt plant at Ruakura is nearly complete. The new plant will soon be producing asphalt for the project – 120,000 tonnes over 12 months. The plant is designed to be disassembled and relocated when final sealing is completed in late 2021.
