Work starting on CNC final seal and low noise asphalt
Unfortunately, October hasn’t played ball with the warm settled weather we need for road sealing but, we are hopeful to get underway at the end of this week.
We will start applying the final chip seal and then the low-noise asphalt layer on the CNC motorway on Sunday night 31 October, weather permitting.
Sealing on the CNC, from the Styx Bridge to QEII Drive, will take 1-2 nights in each direction. We will close, first the southbound lanes overnight from 8pm to 6am, and then the northbound lanes will be closed starting on or about 2 November. People will be detoured via Main North Road. Detour signage will be in place.
From Sunday night 7 November we will chip seal QEII Drive, from the double roundabouts to Main North Road. This will take 1-2 nights to finish.
The chip seal will then be given several weeks to ‘bed in’. Over this time, we will progressively increase as it is safe to do so. Please increase travel distances between cars and drive to the conditions over this time to protect yourself and others on the road.
The Low Noise Asphalting will start on or about Sunday night 28 November depending on the weather. This work takes a bit longer to do than chip sealing, so it will take us about 3-5 days to work our way from Styx Bridge to QEII Drive, and then we will start back up to Styx Bridge again. Asphalting QEII Drive from the roundabouts to Main North Road will follow in early December, weather permitting.
While it is better for traffic flows - unfortunately for those living nearby, this work is noisy. We are mindful that night work is not ideal and we apologise for disturbing you.
We hope to have the section of CNC from the Styx Bridge to QEII Drive and QEII Drive from the roundabouts to Main North Road fully completed before Christmas.
All the surfacing work for the entire motorway (Cranford Street to the Waimakariri Bridge) and QEII Drive between Main North Road and the Innes Road roundabout will take until March 2022 to complete. We will update you on this work via the website and this eNewsletter.
More information and date changes, due to weather, will be provided on the CNC website nzta.govt.nz/cnc and on facebook.com/TransportChCh/ and facebook.com/nztasouthisland/
