Safety improvements completed over 6km of highway

The New Plymouth to Hāwera Safety Improvements Project has now delivered almost 6km of flexible median barriers and wide centreline on SH3.

As shown in green on the map below, five locations have been completed with two further sites (shown in orange) to be improved before work slows for winter.

Later in the year, crews will resume work on the 3.3km section of highway from Junction St to Burgess Hill, New Plymouth. This part of the project includes construction of a roundabout at the Mangorei Road intersection and an intersection speed zone at Junction St, along with a wide centreline to accommodate the future installation of median barriers.

Detailed design of a roundabout at Egmont Village is also underway. Subject to land availability, consenting and funding, this roundabout would cater for large vehicles and farm equipment, with a shared offroad path so cyclists and pedestrians can move safely through the area.

"The team has made some good progress in recent months delivering these safety improvements," says Project Manager Sree Nutulapati.

"Where possible we are utilising the project sites to deliver scheduled road maintenance at the same time - with the goal of minimising disruption to road users."

Over the next five to six years, the New Plymouth to Hāwera Safety Improvements Project aims to install more than 40km of safety improvements, including road widening, wide centrelines, roundabouts and turning facilities to accommodate the future installation of median barriers.
