Fall Orientation - Sept. 5, 2023
PLEASE REGISTER HERE!

Attention New Grad Students! Join us on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023 for an orientation session that will provide you with important information about starting your graduate studies. In addition to hearing about our services here at the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs (FGPA), you will also have the opportunity to hear from members of the Graduate Students’ Association and campus service representatives. This will be an in-person event.

Applications for Fall Graduation are Due Today!
Today, August 31, 2023, is the last day for receipt of applications for potential fall graduates. 

University will be Closed on Monday, Sept. 4, 2023 (Statutory Holiday)

Dr. L. Pauline Rankin Appointed as
Provost and Vice-President (Academic)

Dr. L. Pauline Rankin is the university’s new Provost and Vice-President (Academic) for a five-year term.

Rankin most recently served as the Dean of Carleton’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), a role she had held since July 1, 2018. Prior to her appointment as Dean, she served as Carleton’s Associate Vice-President (Research and International) and as Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Affairs) in FASS. She also completed a term as Director of the Pauline Jewett Institute of Women’s and Gender Studies (now the Feminist Institute of Social Transformation) and served as Director of the School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies.

Carleton President Benoit-Antoine Bacon Leaving University to Take on UBC Presidency

Dr. Jerry Tomberlin will Serve as Interim President and Vice-Chancellor

Benoit-Antoine Bacon, Carleton University’s 15th President and Vice-Chancellor is leaving to assume the presidency of the University of British Columbia (UBC).

Carleton Board of Governors Chair Greg Farrell congratulated Bacon and noted his many achievements, describing his impact on Carleton as “extraordinary.”

“Through strategic vision, hard work, character and unfailing integrity, President Bacon has served our university in so many ways,” said Farrell. “The progress our university has made under his leadership is getting noticed across Canada and clearly caught the eye of UBC.”

Dr. Jerry Tomberlin, who had served as Carleton’s Provost and Vice-President (Academic) since 2017, will begin serving as Interim President and Vice-Chancellor on September 1, 2023. A full search for the 16th President and Vice-Chancellor will be launched in the fall.

Thesis Deadline for Fall 2023 Graduation

Graduate students who have not electronically submitted their final thesis copy to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs by Sept. 19, 2023 will not be eligible to graduate in fall 2023 and must register for the fall 2023 term.

 

Senate Call for Committee Nominations for Grad Students

The Carleton University Senate is calling for nominations for  graduate students to serve on a variety of Senate Standing Committees. Students will serve for a one-year term from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024. Once the deadline for nominations (March 31, 2023) has passed, positions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, provided the nominee meets eligibility requirements.

Students may serve on Senate committees without having been previously elected to a governance position.

NSERC Applicant Virtual Q&A Session – Doctoral and Postdoctoral Programs

NSERC staff will be hosting a Q&A Session for the Doctoral and Postdoctoral Programs on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023 at 11 a.m. Eastern Time. 

Attendees are encouraged to watch the informational videos on their own time via the NSERC YouTube Channel prior to the Q&A Session so the session can be focused on addressing specific questions.

MeWeRTH Lunch and Learn Living Well Series Launch - Sept. 13

You are cordially invited to the Mental Health and Well-Being Research and Training Hub (MeWeRTH) launch event of the Lunch and Learn Living Well Series on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. 

Dr. Robert Coplan will be presenting, “The Power and Paradox of Solitude: Making the Case for the Benefits of Being Alone.”

The event can be attended either in-person (Dunton Tower, Rm 2017, Carleton University) or virtually.

Navigating the Canadian Workplace Workshop Series

Are you looking for a job in Canada but aren’t sure where to begin? Are you thinking about working in Canada in the near future and looking for resources to answer some of your questions? Navigating the Canadian Workplace is a workshop series designed to support international students, and students who are newcomers to Canada, as you explore strategies for finding work and transition into the Canadian workplace.

Workshop topics include:

  • Beginning Your Job Search and Building Your Resume
  • Canadian Workplace Culture
  • Introduction to the Canadian Hiring Process
  • What to Expect in a Job Interview
  • Transitioning into the Canadian Workplace

This workshop series will be offered both in-person and online for fall 2023.

In-person workshops will run Tuesdays from Sept. 19 to Oct. 17, 2023 from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

If you prefer to do this workshop fully online, you can sign up for the asynchronous, self-directed workshop series where you can complete the individual workshops online at your own pace. For this option, you will have from Sept. 19 to Nov. 24, 2023 to complete the workshops.
