What an incredible three or four weeks this has been! Our Minister secured additional funding for the Māori media sector in Budget 2022; Whakaata Māori rebranded and staged the most successful iteration of Ngā Tohu Matariki o Te Tau; Mahi Tahi and Blackout Media along with their respective partners, have rolled out an amazing Matariki ‘awareness campaign’; Aotearoa appears to have genuinely embraced the notion of Matariki; all of our major broadcast platforms are collaborating to deliver unique Matariki broadcast, Disney's The Lion King in te reo Māori and Whina the story of a wahine toa that inspired us all, both premiering this week and on Friday, we will celebrate Matariki as a public holiday for the first time. Te Māngai Pāho is pleased to have been able to play a small part in all of this activity. We are most grateful to all of our partners for including us in this unique opportunity for all of Aotearoa to make a clear statement about who we are. We are also mindful that this will not be seen as a success for Māori and Aotearoa alone. Indigenous peoples all around the world, will look to Aotearoa and draw inspiration from this moment in our history. Mauriora! ![]() Larry Parr, Celebrate Matariki - Mānawatia a Matariki![]() The inaugural Matariki public holiday will be marked by a pre-dawn hautapu ceremony at Te Papa Tongarewa, and will be a part of a five-hour broadcast carried by all major broadcasters in Aoteaora. Funded by Te Māngai Pāho and NZ On Air and hosted by Stacey Morrison and Mātai Smith, the Celebrate Matariki – Mānawatia a Matariki broadcast will provide insights into the significance of Matariki and include waiata, kapa haka, music, panel discussions facilitated by Moana Maniapoto, John Campbell and Julian Wilcox and an address from the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Tune in to the Matariki website, your favourite broadcaster, media network or news outlet from 6:00am Friday 24 June to watch the full broadcast. What to listen to over MatarikiTe Aranga o Matariki - Goldsmith BaynesTe Aranga o Matariki celebrates the rising of Matariki, te mātahi o te tau and names the nine whetū. This waiata was written to celebrate the official inaugural Matariki holiday this year.
