Undoubtedly, more of you will be feeling the bite of COVID-19. Within our small team at Te Māngai Paho within the last 5 days we have had some kaimahi test positive and others isolating as close contacts. We are fortunate, because of our excellent online systems, our team can still work in isolation. We are also fortunate that so far even those that have tested positive have been able to ensure urgent matters are attended to. Please keep safe e te whānau. It's a busy time of the year for us as we work to crystallise our thinking around the business plan for the 2022/23 financial year. Within the next three or four weeks we will have some of our thinking ready to test with you, our stakeholders, before we start the process of formalising it with our Board and Minister. It would be great if we could do that face to face, but I imagine omicron is going to be with us for more than three or four weeks. Please watch this space for more information on that process. ![]() Larry Parr, Kaihautū o Te Māngai Pāho Māori radio across the motuHari Huritau ki a Ngā Iwi FM celebrating 32 years on air on Wednesday 9 o Poutū-te-rangi. Māori musicWe are sad to be losing waiata reo Māori allies David Ridler, Head of Music at NZ On Air and Damian Vaughan, CEO of Recorded Music to personal endeavours in the next couple of months. David and Damian have both played a huge part in bringing waiata reo Māori to the mainstream and will be sorely missed. David was a key collaborator in the Waiata Takitahi co-fund, while Damian was driver in creating a weekly Top 10 Te Reo Singles chart and was instrumental in increasing the visibility of te reo Māori at the Aotearoa Music Awards. Waiata HouTūwhitia Te Hopo - Te Kuru Dewes, Troy Kingi Tūwhitia Te Hopo written by Te Kuru o Te Marama Dewes (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Rangitihi) and performed by Troy Kingi (Te Arawa, Ngāpuhi, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui) is a call for all to embrace and cherish te reo as the indigenous language of Aotearoa. "In the context of this waiata, we are encouraging second-language learners to relinquish the fear and anxiety of learning, making peace with yourself, and dive in" says Dewes. Tūwhitia Te Hopo was funded by Te Māngai Pāho's 'Tūhonohono' initiative to connect Māori language songwriters with New Zealand musicians to grow the corpus of Māori language music. ![]() Nearly one in every four songs played in 2021 on the main contemporary commercial music networks was from a New Zealand act and we’re hearing more waiata in te reo Māori. NZ On Air released their findings that commercial radio stations played record levels of New Zealand music in 2021, with the annual figure reaching 23.84% This is a testament to the quality of music being produced and the desire to hear it played on our airwaves in Aotearoa.
