SH16 Brigham Creek to Waimauku Stage 2 geotech investigations

Stage 2 (Brigham Creek to Kumeū) design works are ramping up with geotech investigations about to begin in the road corridor. These investigations will help to inform our planning and design by measuring the strength of the land and assessing soil and rock at particular locations.

Works will range fromhand held equipment, truck-mounted rigs drilling into the ground to excavators collecting soil and subsurface samples and other equipment monitoring underground water.

We appreciate this is a very busy section of the state highway, but we must undertake these surveys to allow us to plan for the safety upgrade to the corridor.

Where are you doing these works?

We will be working on State Highway 16 between Kumeū and Brigham Creek. The work will start from east to west, however, this is subject to change depending on progress and weather. The particular locations we will be working are:

  • SH16 between Kennedys Road to 300 SH16 (just before the Coatesville/Riverhead highway)
  • SH16 between Coatesville/Riverhead Highway to Taupaki roundabout
  • SH16 between Taupaki roundabout and Juicy ice cream shop
  • Main Road, Kumeū between Riverhead Road and Weza Lane.

What impact will you have on traffic?

We will be on site working from 9am-3pm to reduce the impact on peak hour traffic. Works will be for up to four weeks, subject to weather impacts starting the week beginning 7 December 2020.

Where works are taking place, there will also be shoulder closures, however, we will not be impacting traffic lanes. There will be no impact to peoples' access in and out of their properties. There will be temporary speed limit changes from 9am-3pm to keep our workers safe whilst in the road corridor. The following temporary speed limit changes will only be where our staff are working and include:

  • SH16 – 50km/h (reduced from 80km/h)
  • Coatesville/Riverhead Highway – 50 km/h (reduced from 60km/h)
  • Main Road, Kumeū – 50km/h (reduced from 60km/h).

What other investigations and surveys are required?

During the next few months, we will be undertaking a range of investigations and surveys over a wide area to help inform the design for Stage 2 of the project. Some of this work will take place in public spaces and some will be on private property.

We may contact you to ask if an investigation or survey can be carried out on your property, but it does not necessarily mean that your property will be directly impacted by the project. The kind of investigations  and surveys we will be carrying out include topographical surveys, ecological surveys, wastewater investigations as well as geotech investigaitons to help us build a picture of what is happening above and below ground.

Why are you doing this project?

State Highway 16 Brigham Creek to Waimauku project's primary aim is to improve safety along this section of highway as well as to enable people to walk and cycle along Stage 2 of the project.

The project will improve both safety and capacity along this busy route whilst long-term investigations are underway to address growth and congestion in the Northwest. Stage 2 is the section between Brigham Creek and Kumeu, which will include:

  • Putting in flexible road safety barriers to catch drivers who leave their lane before hitting something harder like trees, poles, ditches or other vehicles. Flexible barriers will be installed along the road except between Taupaki and Kumeu.
  • Adding extra lanes between Brigham Creek and Taupaki roundabout from two lanes to four Heading (two in each direction), to help improve travel times in the short-term, ahead of longer-term improvements.
  • Putting in a flush median, which is a painted area in the middle of the road to give you more room and a safe place to wait before turning, while traffic can continue to flow.
  • SH16/Coatesville Riverhead Highway intersection improvements to help traffic flow better and make it safer to turn.
  • Creating a new shared path between Kumeu and Brigham Creek for walking and cycling. By connecting into the wider Auckland cycling network, we are providing genuine travel choice for the community.

Auckland Transport has recently published an interactive map that shows the locations of crashes on Auckland's roads that resulted in deaths of serious injuries between 2015 and 2020. Every dot on the map is a real person or sometimes multiple people. We all have our part to play in reducing these terrible statistics.
