Why are you doing this project?
State Highway 16 Brigham Creek to Waimauku project's primary aim is to improve safety along this section of highway as well as to enable people to walk and cycle along Stage 2 of the project.
The project will improve both safety and capacity along this busy route whilst long-term investigations are underway to address growth and congestion in the Northwest. Stage 2 is the section between Brigham Creek and Kumeu, which will include:
-
Putting in flexible road safety barriers to catch drivers who leave their lane before hitting something harder like trees, poles, ditches or other vehicles. Flexible barriers will be installed along the road except between Taupaki and Kumeu.
-
Adding extra lanes between Brigham Creek and Taupaki roundabout from two lanes to four Heading (two in each direction), to help improve travel times in the short-term, ahead of longer-term improvements.
-
Putting in a flush median, which is a painted area in the middle of the road to give you more room and a safe place to wait before turning, while traffic can continue to flow.
-
SH16/Coatesville Riverhead Highway intersection improvements to help traffic flow better and make it safer to turn.
-
Creating a new shared path between Kumeu and Brigham Creek for walking and cycling. By connecting into the wider Auckland cycling network, we are providing genuine travel choice for the community.
Auckland Transport has recently published an interactive map that shows the locations of crashes on Auckland's roads that resulted in deaths of serious injuries between 2015 and 2020. Every dot on the map is a real person or sometimes multiple people. We all have our part to play in reducing these terrible statistics.
