1. Smooth ride in the north

Story
Story

The final smooth surface for the expressway is going down in the north. Two lanes of the final stone mastic asphalt (SMA) has been laid near Lake Road. Now it’s full steam ahead with the final surfacing  this summer. There’s 110,000 tonnes to lay before the project is finished. The video below shows chip sealing and asphalt being laid in December.

2. Building the off-ramp from Te Rapa

We’re building an off-ramp to take northbound traffic off the Ngaruawahia section onto Lake Road. This will allow motorists travelling north from Te Rapa to exit at Lake Road, then take the Lake Road on-ramp to travel south on the Hamilton section. The video below shows earthworks activity near the Ngaruawahia section.

3. Perfecting the pavement

Our Hi-Lab team is working up and down the project completing sections of pavement, ready for sealing. The team was hard at it last week finishing pavement near Puketaha Road. Our Hi-Lab road blend is spread, levelled, mixed with cement and compacted. Fine sand and crusher dust is spread on top then watered so it seeps into the pavement to fill any voids between the rocks. Then the pavement sets hard like concrete.

4. Some like it hot…

Hot, steaming asphalt is now pouring out of our new plant at Ruakura – supplying all the asphalt we’ll need to finish the surfacing. The relocatable plant can produce 140 tonnes an hour, providing a steady supply for the remainder of the project.

5. Final connection for southern on-ramp

The dig-out under the East West Link Bridge in Tamahere is now well advanced. This is the final link in the on-ramp that will take traffic south from Hamilton towards Cambridge. The dig-out couldn’t begin until our bridge crew built a large concrete anchor wall to reinforce the retaining wall under the bridge. The photo below was captured on day one of the dig-out.
