Click here Cotton Matters An unusually wet summer last year has cotton growers concerned about the possibly devastating impact of spray drift as farmers try to stay on top of emerging weeds with good crops of cotton coming out of the ground. The 2022-23 season saw one of the worst years on record for spray drift with some farmers suffering millions of dollars’ worth of lost production. Cotton Australia’s advocacy on issues such as water, SunWater pricing, energy, and tariff reform were all key discussion points. The Chair of the Cotton Australian's Board Nigel Burnett has joined CA’s Senior Policy Manager for Northern Australia on a whistle-stop tour, meeting with growers, industry support services and government departments. Travelling over 1000km in four days, the pair braved Territory heat and a couple of big storms to hold meetings with key industry stakeholders. The review of the myBMP program began in late October, with consultants Schuster Consulting Group and GED Advisory meeting Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay and CRDC Executive Director Allan Williams to assess the program’s alignment with sustainability requirements. Michael Murray, Cotton Australia's General Manager, has been appointed as an Honorary Delegate to the NSW Irrigators’ Council (NSWIC) in recognition of his years of hard work representing cotton growers and irrigators. Australia’s cotton industry was well represented by Wee Waa grower and CA board member Daniel Kahl at the Textile Exchange Conference in California last month, where regenerative agriculture, biodiversity and soil health practices and preferred raw materials were the focus. Traceability for Australian cotton is one step closer, as a research project funded by the Queensland Government enters its second phase. Researchers have delivered a report for the first phase of the “Investigating Traceability Solutions for Australian Cotton” project which has identified system requirements, data needs and the current state of play. Cotton Australia is backing the Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) National Agriculture Day campaign by asking Queenslanders to reflect on what farmers mean to them and the agricultural products they can’t live without. Geography students at Ingleburn High School recently joined a hands-on incursion led by Cotton Australia’s Education Manager, Jenny Hughes. myBMP Grace Griffiths was only 16 and still in school when she started working on the myBMP (Best Management Practices) certification for her family’s farm.
