Better Streets Newsletter No. 33 | April 2025

Dear Better Street supporter

With the 2025 Federal Election fast approaching, now is the time to demand safer, more accessible streets. We’ve launched an easy-to-use email tool that helps you contact all the candidates in your local electorate with just a few clicks.
👉 Use the tool now – it only takes a minute!
(We’ve even drafted a message for you – just personalise it with local details.)

Why it matters
Right now, the Australian Government spends only $0.90 per person on walking, wheeling, and cycling infrastructure – compared to $714 per person on roads. We're calling for a modest increase to $15 per person, which would make our streets safer and more inclusive for everyone.

Make your voice heard
This election, we’re campaigning across every electorate to secure real investment in active transport. Your voice can help push this issue to the top of the agenda.

Spread the word
Share the tool with friends, neighbours, and your community. The more people who speak up, the stronger the message to candidates: Australia needs better streets.

NSW Roads Act review

🚸 A Generational Opportunity for Safer Streets

Back in 1993, Australia was buzzing with excitement—Sydney had just been announced as the host of the 2000 Olympics, and dreams of gold medals and Cathy Freeman’s victory lap were on the horizon. But while we were celebrating, another major event quietly took place—the NSW Roads Act 1993 was gazetted.

Fast forward 32 years, and much has changed. Our cities have grown, transport has evolved, and we now recognise that streets aren’t just for cars—they’re vital public spaces that shape our mobility, health, and environment. That’s why Transport for NSW has launched a review of the Roads Act, an opportunity we can’t afford to miss!

This is our chance to push for safer, more people-friendly streets—streets where walking, cycling, and public transport are prioritized alongside cars. Better Streets has made a submission to ensure the new Act reflects these priorities. Read more: link.
