Internationally awarded and recognised as one of the most effective pieces of environmental legislation, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Zoning Plan 2003 was passed into law in December 2003. Reef Guardian Schools go globalThe Reef Guardian School program is ‘going global’ and taking the wonders of the Reef into classrooms around the world. Building on 20 years of working successfully with schools in the Reef catchment, teachers and students from around Australia and the world will be able to join the Reef Guardian School community for the first time and access the program’s resources. Reef Authority wins goldThe Reef Authority's procurement team have won gold at the Australian Department of Finance's Centre for Excellence Awards day in Canberra. The award recognises the Reef Authority's strong commitment to encouraging environmental sustainability through procurement practices across the organisation. The awards celebrate the positive procurement achievements delivered by entities by showcasing better practice, leadership, innovation and excellence. Teaming up for top managementThe Reef Authority has developed a set of co-management principles with the Indigenous Reef Advisory Committee and Marine Park Board. These principles embrace the inherent rights and interests, expertise and knowledge and cultural authority of Traditional Owner groups to better co-manage Sea Country together. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority acknowledges the continuing Sea Country management and custodianship of the Great Barrier Reef by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traditional Owners whose rich cultures, heritage values, enduring connections and shared efforts protect the Reef for future generations.
