The Great South Update February 2022 Today marks the launch of the Southland Just Transition Workplan. The ‘Just Transition’ reference may be familiar to some of you but I’m sure there will be many who aren’t sure what this is.This is a Government and Regional collaboration to support the delivery of a just transition for workers and the wider region in response to the planned closure of the NZAS Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter in December 2024. This commitment acknowledges the importance of NZAS to the Southland community, the need to diversify the local economy, and the long-term move toward a low carbon future. Great South has been fully involved in the development of this process and I’m very pleased that we have been specifically contracted to lead the ‘Long-term planning’ workstream which will effectively refresh the previous 2015 – 2025 Southland Regional Development Strategy (SoRDs). Bobbi Brown has been seconded for 18 months to be project director on this workstream. For all the information about Just Transitions please visit the website which was just launched today. More details and a link are below. It looks like we’re in for another few months of uncertainty around COVID settings and community impacts. Take care and do get your booster shots as soon as possible to help protect you, your family and our communities.
