Piarere roundabout accelerating towards finish line

The new roundabout at the intersection of State Highways 1 and 29 in Piarere is all go!

Construction began in January 2024 with the project expected to be finished within 2 years. Work is on track to be completed laterin early September with the planting of around 200,000 plants and finishing touches to the underpasses.

The speed limit through the area is now 100km/h, but remember the rules when driving through roundabouts: you are expected to slow down as you approach and must be prepared to give way.

This is a key step towards completion, enabling quicker travel between the regions and signalling the finish line for this significant project.

The 60-metre roundabout, which is designed to improve efficiency and safety on this heavily used route, will connect to the future SH1 Cambridge to Piarere expressway (C2P).

C2P consenting process update

Over the past few months, the C2P project team has been working on the many parts of the puzzle needed before an earthmover can begin work on building the expressway.

A key workstream has been the consenting process. In December 2024 we lodged our consent and Notices of Requirements with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). This was under the Fast-track consenting pathway via the Natural and Built Environment Act 2023.

Since we’ve been progressing through the complex process. We’ve provided reports, responded to requests for further information sought by the expert panel and attended expert conferencing on a number of topics.

We expect a decision to be made by mid-September.

The latest information is available on the EPA website, including draft conditions.

Karāpiro School gets a front-row seat to expressway progress

We’re proud to be keeping Karāpiro School in the loop as C2P moves forward. Regular updates and open communication have helped ensure the school community stays informed and involved, even though no shovels are in the ground.

Recently a team of surveyors from the project team, including experts from WSP, visited the school grounds to gather important data that will help shape the parts of the expressway that directly affect the school.

But it wasn’t just business as usual — students got a hands-on look at the fascinating world of surveying!

The team took time to chat with students, show off some of their high-tech tools, and explain how their work helps bring big infrastructure projects to life. It was a great opportunity for students to see real-world science and technology in action—and maybe even spark a few future careers!

📸 Check out the photos below to see the students in action and the surveyors at work!

Blockbuster 2nd season for SH1 Tīrau to Waiouru maintenance project

SH1 Tīrau to Waiouru Accelerated Maintenance Project is back for season 2 but unlike the bingeable Netflix series you hope will be extended into a third season, our second season will be final, but it’s a blockbuster.

Spoiler alert: We will not be using full 24/7 road closures to complete work in season 2 but we will require some nighttime only closures on SH1 between Tokoroa and Ātiamuri, on the Desert Road and at Tīrau. The schedule for this and detours are still being finalised and we will update as soon as we have the details.

While we aren’t using 24/7 closures, you should still expect disruption and some delays on SH1 near our work sites, particularly between Taupō and Tūrangi where we are starting on Monday 1 September and have the most work to complete.

In season one we rebuilt approximately 49km of SH1 between Tīrau and Waiouru which is why we needed all those road closures. This season we have the final road surface to complete on 5 sections of SH1, including the Desert Road. We also have complete road rebuilds and maintenance between Taupō and Tūrangi, and on the edges of Tokoroa and Tīrau townships. By the end of the project, we will have rebuilt 66km of SH1, bringing these areas up to a significantly higher standard requiring less road works in these areas in the future.

Waikato summer maintenance programme - coming soon

NZTA maintains 1,745km of state highways across Waikato and each summer we deliver a road renewal programme to keep the network safe, accessible, and supportive of economic growth.

This season we are investing in a significant road rebuild programme, alongside many resealing and resurfacing sites throughout the region. This work is in addition to our regular summer maintenance, which ensures the network remains safe, reliable, and fit for purpose.

We’re also changing how we tell you about upcoming roadworks, focusing more on using emails and our Waikato & Bay of Plenty Facebook page.

Emails and social media are now the way most people prefer to hear about maintenance we’re doing, and they’re more cost-effective and efficient – for example, we can easily tell you about late changes to works happening, such as when planned roadworks are affected by the weather.

In some cases you'll also get printed letters from us about work happening in your area.

Our emails will tell you about work happening on state highways in your region in the week ahead.

Our website has a full list of maintenance emails for every region.
