Public Information Day on November 17

A public Information Day on SH1 Cambridge to Piarere will be held on Thursday November 17, 2022 from 1pm until 6pm, at the Cambridge Town Hall.

You can come along to talk to the various teams from Waka Kotahi who are working on the projects on this corridor. These include the plans to improve the safety on the current highway, as well as the long-term plans for the expressway between Cambridge and Piarere.

There will also be the chance for you to have input into the shared walking and cycling paths that are being designed as part of the long-term plans.

Information on the SH1/SH29 intersection improvement will be available.

Cara and Matt from the maintenance team will be happy to chat about what maintenance is planned over summer and beyond.

If you can't attend the Information Day, there is also the opportunity to give feedback on the shared pathway and the safety improvements on-line or you can email us.

Please have your feedback to us by 9 December 2022.

New signage and temporary speed limits

Story

Story

Temporary speed limits in place

The speed limit has been reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h from near the end of the Waikato Expressway to just past the intersection of SH1 with Karāpiro Road (approximately 4km). This is a temporary measure until more permanent safety infrastructure is in place.

'High Crash Area’ signs north of Hickey Road and south of Karāpiro Road have been erected, so people are aware of the upcoming risks.

We will soon add wide painted median strips north of Hickey Road through to Fergusson Gully Road to provide more space between opposing traffic, reducing the risk of head-on crashes, until flexible median barriers can be installed.

What do you think of these changes? Come and tell us at the Information Day on Thursday 17 November or email us.

Community engagement

Thanks so much to all of the residents, business owners and landowners who have discussed your concerns about using this highway with us, and who have made suggestions about further safety improvements you want to see on SH1.

So far the message is loud and clear - these safety improvements are eagerly awaited, and not before time.

The intersection of SH1 and Hydro Road

Hydro Road intersection

The concept plans at the time of preparing the ad (see map below) for our upcoming Information Day included the option to reconfigure Hydro Road into a left-in, left-out only turn, and install turnarounds near Hickey Road.

We are now considering installing a turnaround facility at Hydro Road, which means drivers could continue to turn right from SH1 into Hydro Road. Your feedback on how this could work for you will be an important part of our final decision-making process.

Walking & cycling connections

We are investigating options for walking and cycling as part of our long-term plans between Cambridge and Piarere, and we are keen to hear your thoughts.

You will be able to share your views at the Information Day on November 17, where the project team will be available to chat. Alternatively, there is an on-line option for your feedback.

We want you to tell us what is important to you regarding shared pathways, as part of our longer-term plans for improvements of our transport network.
