The iconic Australian brand has embraced Australian cotton in its best-selling Burton and Sandy workshirts, reinforcing their deep ties to rural Australia. Armed with a sign reading “Ask an Aussie Cotton Farmer,” Joe started conversations with commuters to find out what they knew about cotton with most admitting they hadn’t thought much about where cotton came from. The Central Highlands Cotton Growers and Irrigators Association held its annual awards night in Emerald last week, bringing together industry members to recognise top-performing growers. The Burnett family’s Barwin property and the Keeley family of Keeley Ag took top honours for their achievements in the 2023/24 season. With 70% of Australian family farms set to transition to the next generation within five years, the Future Farming Forum—hosted by Cotton Australia, RB Sellars, and the Future Farmers Network—brought together over 30 young Darling Downs cotton farmers to discuss challenges, opportunities, and training needs. Cotton Australia General Manager Michael Murray met with the Deputy Leader of the Nationals and Opposition Spokesperson for Water, Senator Perin Davey, and the Nationals candidate for the NSW seat of Whitlam, Katrina Hodgkinson, in Sydney last week. Cotton growers and contractors are urged to remain vigilant after numerous cotton modules were lost to fire on farms and at a gin. Even dry cotton can catch fire, so spreading out modules, monitoring machinery, and keeping an eye on stored modules can help reduce the risk. National Irrigators meeting The National Irrigators Council held meetings in Sydney this week, endorsing key policy statements on the Murray-Darling Basin Plan, the Sustainable Diversion Limits Adjustment Mechanism (SDLAM) Reconciliation Framework, and Constraint Management in the lead-up to a Federal Election campaign. Cotton Australia's Education Manager has been busy attending the PIEFA Board Networking Lunch, scheduling Teach the Teacher events in Trangie and Warren, and coordinating applications for early career teacher sponsorships to attend the PIEFA Conference in Canberra.
